CBN For Sleep Study: Researchers Give Their Input

Cannabinol (CBN) is one of the newer cannabinoids that is piquing the interest of researchers for several reasons. Some of the purported benefits of CBN include pain relief, neuroprotection, and of course sleep promotion. If you are versed with the medical cannabis space you have probably heard of CBN being referred to as the “sleeper cannabinoid.”

As happens often in the cannabinoid wellness industry, business savvy CBD companies have quickly switched from marketing CBD as a sleep aid to marketing CBN for the same reason. In most cases, this has been presumptuous or lacking substantial clinical evidence. A review that was conducted in early 2021 showed no significant basis for promoting CBN’s sleep-promoting effects. However, the researchers recommended further studies to separate fact from fiction. And that is exactly what a new that was sponsored by CBD American Shaman has done.

CBD American Shaman is one of the largest brick-and-mortar CBD retailers in the U.S. It has over 360 locations that are spread out across different states. The company is deeply involved in cannabinoid science and recently they sponsored studies to investigate the safety and efficacy of CBD, CBN, and CBG. The results from these studies were released at a prestigious cannabis event dubbed “The International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) conference.” One study unearthed interesting findings on the sleep-inducing potential of CBN.

The CBN study was titled “Use of a Water-Soluble Form of Cannabinol for the Treatment of Sleeplessness.” Water-soluble CBN was used because it has higher bioavailability as compared to regular lipophilic CBN.

The participants were offered a low dose of the water-soluble CBN: 1-4mg. The researchers found that CBN improved both the quality and the length of sleep without causing any adverse events. The participants were able to sleep for a longer duration and they woke up feeling well-rested. They were also able to progress well from one stage of sleep to the next.

We spoke to Vince Sanders, the CEO of CBD American Shaman, and Dr. Robert Kauffman, the lead researcher about the CBN study. Here are highlights of what we learned.

CBD American Shaman is committed to science. What’s the inspiration?

Vince: We have always been committed to evidence-based cannabis medicine. This was one of the many studies that we have conducted to ensure that what we offer to our customers is backed by science as this is what drives us.

From the study, it appears that CBN is a powerful sleep-inducing substance. Did this come as a surprise to you?

Vince: Most of what was revealed by the study did not catch us by surprise. We have been offering water-soluble (nano) CBN to our clientele and the response has been very positive and in tandem with the results of the study. Nano-emulsification breaks down the CBN and increases its absorption across the gastrointestinal tract and into the bloodstream. I was delighted by the results.

Dr. Kaufman: Not exactly, since I have been CBD and CBN products with many of my patients and I have seen a positive response in a majority. However, this particular CBN study had an element of surprise. With CBD, you will observe that some patients with sleep disorders are able to experience an improvement while some are not. However, with CBN, 100% of all the participants benefited from the treatment.

CBN was able to address the full range of sleep disorders that the participants had presented with. The nano-treated CBN reduced the incidence and severity of sleep disorders which I found to be quite striking. The participants were equally surprised at how well this treatment worked.

What next after the study?

Dr. Kaufmann: I expect that this and such studies will continue to demystify cannabinoid-based medicine and grant wider acceptance for this kind of treatment. People should begin to view cannabis wholesomely embrace its therapeutic value and not just focus on the negative publicity that the herb has been subjected to in the past.

CBD American Shaman is highly engaged in cannabis science even as they seek to offer high-quality cannabinoids products to their international clientele. To learn more about what they are up to you can visit their website.
