A new study has revealed that it may be unsafe to offer fresh marijuana buds to donkeys due to a risk of marijuana toxicosis. The study was published in the Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation.

The study which was titled “Marijuana Toxicosis in 2 Donkeys” revealed a high risk for hospitalization following the administration of cannabis. Marijuana toxicosis refers to a pathological condition that occurs due the accumulation of toxins from marijuana in the body. Most times, the exposure is usually accidental and dogs are more likely to be victims than cats.  It usually presents with symptoms such as increased heart and pulse rate, diminished tongue tone, restlessness, colic, stroke, and seizures.

The cases involved in the study were a male (20y) and female (8y) donkey presented with a few grams of cannabis for the treatment of lethargy and depression. The donkeys displayed symptoms of “being high” with symptoms lasting for an extended duration. It took Jenny a whole 24 hours to have a comedown during which period she was rushed to hospital. Other symptoms exhibited by the donkeys included ataxia, increased heart rate, mild colic, and decreased tongue tone. Both donkeys had made a full recovery after the 24 hour period.

The researchers were able to screen the donkeys to establish that their symptoms were as a result of the intoxicating cannabinoids that they had ingested. The concentration of cannabinoids in plasma was determined. A screening test was used in collaboration with a vet lab; this is necessary when an equine practitioner suspects a case of marijuana toxicosis.

How is Marijuana Toxicosis Treated?

Usually, a stomach cleansing, also called a gastric lavage, should be performed using activated charcoal. Traditional laxatives can also be administered.

Should Marijuana be offered to Donkeys?

The study did not directly express the ethics of offering cannabis to donkeys. While cannabidiol (CBD) is considered completely safe for animals, the same cannot be said of the intoxicating cannabinoid THC. With that in mind, it is advisable to intentionally offer marijuana to donkeys or any other animal without getting express instructions from a pet doctor.
