Portugal legalized medical cannabis in 2018. By 2021, some of the popular autoflowering strains from Portugal were making headlines in the international cannabis space due to their high THC potency.

Auto Cinderella Jack, with up to 28% THC, was initially cited as the world's strongest autoflower strain but was soon after overtaken by Auto Skywalker Haze which has up to 29% THC. Both autoflowering strains are from Portuguese company Pure Healing; a company which was co-founded by Sérgio Neto.

Sérgio is one of the most renowned cannabis growers and business leaders in the budding cannabis industry in Portugal.  He is passionate about creating the best cannabis strains using organic methods as well as creating a thriving cannabis industry in Portugal.

In this interview, he sheds light on his cannabis journey and also shares insights into the potential of the Portuguese cannabis industry.

Meet Sérgio.

As a brief introduction, how did your career path lead you to the cannabis industry?

Sérgio: My background is in Enterprise Management. My interest in the cannabis industry started when my grandmother was ailing from leukemia and her only relief came from medical cannabis. This experience forced me to look more into creating the best strains that could help patients such as my grandmother. Since then, it has been my desire to grow safe and potent cannabis for medical patients in Portugal as well as for export.

In 2018, Portugal legalized medical cannabis and soon after I co-founded Pure Healing to cultivate and export cannabis. Pure Healing was the first start up in Portugal with license to grow, import and export. Pure Healing won 2 international awards for the most potent autoflower strains in the world.

Auto Cinderella Jack was reported to be the world's strongest autoflower strain after the strain tested at 28% THC. Soon after we created Auto Skywalker Haze which set a new record after testing at 29% THC.

Briefly introduce Cannacare and your unique role in the company

Sérgio: I’m an independent cannabis business consultant looking to help companies in Portugal launch and scale their operations in the legal cannabis industry. I was hired by CannaCare towards the end of last year as both a business consultant and master grower. My role entails helping the cannabis business to grow and export cannabis as well as overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company.

What has been the highlight of your company/career in 2022?

Sérgio: My highlight in 2022 was achieving, for the second consecutive year running,  international recognition for creating the most potent cannabis flower in the world. However, I left Pure Healing in August 2022 and started my journey as an individual.

Any predictions for the cannabis industry in 2023? What’s next for Sergio?

Sérgio: We are facing unprecedented times as an industry that’s quickly becoming global. The world at large is having positive conversations around legalizing recreational cannabis and I believe that 2023 could be a turning point for the industry.

Lots of players out of Portugal are looking at the country as the biggest opportunity to produce quality cannabis for Europe.

I want to help companies to achieve their goals on cultivating the best cannabis strains as well as increasing the efficiency of their daily operations as cannabis businesses.

It was a great pleasure to have this conversation with Sérgio Neto, Business Consultant & Head Grower at CannaCare. Readers who wish to keep up with how Cannacare is transforming the cannabis  industry in Portugal are welcome to visit their website.
