What the FDA Says About Delta-8 THC
Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, aka Delta-8, has risen in popularity in the recent past due to its therapeutic potential and of course, its psychoactive properties which is a legal grey area. Like its isomer delta-9-THC, delta is a psychoactive molecule. But unlike THC, it is not very clear whether delta 8 is legal or illegal since FDA has not directly listed delta-8-THC under schedule 1 of the controlled substances act.
Sensing the controversy and possible risk to consumers, last September the FDA came clean expressed their take on delta 8. Here are five important points that were highlighted in the statement that was issued by the FDA. The full details can be accessed through this link.
1. The FDA has not evaluated or approved any delta-8 products for any use
Delta- 8 products have been aggressively marketed for several therapeutic and recreational purposes. The FDA has stated that such claims are unsubstantiated and not supported or approved by the FDA. The public is therefore cautioned against claims which may be deceptive and misleading.
2. Some FDA products have been associated with adverse events
The FDA has received a number of adverse event reports from both the public and law enforcement officers. Patients who have consumed D8, intentionally or unintentionally, have found themselves in emergency departments presenting with vomiting, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, and imbalance. Out of 661 delta-8 exposures that have been recorded at the national poison control centers 18% have required hospitalization.
3. Delta-8 THC is psychoactive
The FDA acknowledged that delta-8 is intoxicating and psychoactive and it produces effects that are similar to those produced by delta-9-THC. The FDA also acknowledged that they are aware that delta-8 is being marketed for its psychoactive properties.
4. Harmful chemicals may be used to create the high concentrations of delta8 that are in the market
Delta-8 occurs in very small quantities in natural cannabis. Most of the delta-8 that is in the market is made synthetically from other cannabinoids such as CBD. The FDA is concerned about some of the chemicals that are used in the process.
5. Delta-8 THC products should not be packaged to appeal to children
Delta 8 products should not be packaged to appeal to children, as has been happening. There have been several incidences of children showing up in emergency departments after accidentally consuming delta 8 products, especially delta 8 edibles.
Some states have banned delta 8 products because of such concerns. However, researchers are looking into the therapeutic potential of this psychoactive cannabinoid and so far, the results have been promising.
