In South Africa, the cannabis landscape is fraught with legal complexities that often lead to unjust consequences for individuals involved in its cultivation, distribution, and use. Despite shifting attitudes towards cannabis globally, many South Africans continue to face imprisonment and legal repercussions for their involvement with the plant, a reality that highlights the urgent need for legislative reform.

MyCannabis had the privilege of speaking with Myrtle Clarke, a prominent figure in South Africa's cannabis advocacy movement and the Managing Director of Fields of Green for All. Through her tireless efforts with Fields of Green for All, Myrtle has been at the forefront of campaigns to challenge unjust cannabis laws and promote equitable access to cannabis for all South Africans. In this conversation, she shares insights into the organization's mission, the challenges they face in advocating for cannabis reform, and the strides they have made towards achieving their goals in the face of legal and societal obstacles.

MyCannabis: How did you find yourself involved in the cannabis industry?

Myrtle: Thank you for having me. My journey into the cannabis industry began in 2010 when my late partner and I were arrested at our home outside Johannesburg. Faced with the prospect of bribery, imprisonment, or fighting the unjust laws, we chose to challenge the system. We applied to the high court to suspend our charges and launched a constitutional challenge against the government. This pivotal moment ignited my passion for activism and laid the foundation for my involvement in cannabis law reform.

MyCannabis: Can you briefly introduce Fields of Green For All?

Myrtle: Fields of Green for All, established in 2013, is a non-profit organization dedicated to cannabis advocacy, education, and community empowerment. We operate under the belief that every individual, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to the healing properties of cannabis. Our mission extends beyond legal battles; we strive for social justice, challenging institutionalized prejudice and fighting for the rights of cannabis users, growers, and traders.

MyCannabis: What role has Fields of Green for All played in cannabis law reform in South Africa?

Myrtle: Fields of Green for All has been at the forefront of cannabis law reform in South Africa. We initiated The Trial of the Plant, a groundbreaking legal case challenging the constitutionality of cannabis laws. Despite facing formidable opposition, we've continued to push for change through strategic partnerships, grassroots mobilization, and advocacy at local and international levels. Our goal is to dismantle unjust laws, empower communities, and create a more equitable cannabis industry for all.

MyCannabis: What are some of the challenges you've faced in advocating for cannabis reform?

Myrtle: One of the biggest challenges we've encountered is opposition from well-funded organizations and institutions that benefit from the status quo. Entities like Doctors for Life have actively opposed our efforts, backed by significant financial resources. Additionally, navigating the complex legal landscape and addressing societal stigma surrounding cannabis remain ongoing challenges. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to driving change and overcoming these obstacles.

MyCannabis: How does Fields of Green for All envision the future of cannabis in South Africa?

Myrtle: Our vision for the future of cannabis in South Africa is one of inclusivity, justice, and opportunity. We strive to create a regulatory framework that prioritizes social equity, economic empowerment, and access to quality cannabis products. Through continued advocacy, education, and collaboration, we aim to build a thriving and sustainable cannabis industry that benefits all members of society, particularly those who have historically been marginalized.

MyCannabis: What are some key initiatives or projects that Fields of Green for All is currently undertaking?

Myrtle: Currently, Fields of Green for All is focused on several key initiatives, including grassroots organizing, legal advocacy, and public education campaigns. We're actively involved in ongoing legal battles to challenge unjust laws and expand access to cannabis for medical and recreational purposes. Additionally, we're working to address the systemic inequalities within the cannabis industry and promote opportunities for small-scale growers and entrepreneurs. Our goal is to build a more equitable and inclusive cannabis landscape that reflects the diverse needs and interests of all South Africans.

MyCannabis: How can individuals support the work of Fields of Green for All and contribute to cannabis reform in South Africa?

Myrtle: There are many ways individuals can support our work and contribute to cannabis reform in South Africa. This includes staying informed about current issues and legislation, participating in advocacy efforts, and amplifying our message through social media and community outreach. Additionally, financial contributions and volunteer efforts play a crucial role in sustaining our organization and driving positive change. By coming together as a collective force, we can create a brighter future for cannabis in South Africa and beyond.

MyCannabis: It's clear that Fields of Green for All is making waves in the cannabis reform landscape. What's next for your organization?

Myrtle: Our journey is far from over. With the release of “Cannabis in South Africa: The People's Plant,” we've set a bold agenda for policy reform. Our manifesto encapsulates years of research and advocacy, outlining our vision for a fair and inclusive cannabis industry. Moving forward, we'll continue to challenge fear-based legislation and advocate for the rights of all cannabis users, growers, and traders. Our ultimate goal is to achieve Fields of Green for All for ALL South Africans, setting a precedent for cannabis reform across Africa and the world.

MyCannabis: Thank you, Myrtle, for sharing your insights and inspiring journey with us.

Myrtle: It's been my pleasure. Together, we'll continue to sow the seeds of change and cultivate a brighter future for cannabis enthusiasts everywhere. And remember, our fight isn't just for South Africa; it's for every individual who believes in the power of cannabis to heal and empower communities.
