Cannabis 101:
Science Reveals How To Roll A Joint Correctly

Scientists at Delic Labs, a marijuana and psilocybin research facility in Vancouver, recently conducted a groundbreaking experiment to explore how the size of ground-up cannabis flower impacts the consumer’s experience as pre-rolled joints gain popularity in the legal cannabis market.
The Study
The researchers used marijuana broken down into one-, three-, and five-millimeter-diameter grounds, packing three grams of each into commercially available pre-rolled papers. They then employed a “smoke cycle simulator” device, which consistently inhaled several times while analyzing the resulting smoke for cannabinoid concentration at different stages of consumption.
Presenting their findings at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition in Vancouver, the researchers revealed that the 1mm cannabis grounds delivered the most potent hit, containing the highest levels of cannabinoids like THC and CBD. However, these joints also burned the fastest. On the other hand, the 5mm joints provided the longest-lasting experience.
A PowerPoint slide displayed during the conference emphasized the importance of improving joint architecture to enhance consumer experiences, given the observed variability in results.
The following was observed:
- 1mm cannabis grounds produced the most potent hit with high levels of THC and CBD
- 5mm joints provided the longest-lasting experience
- Joints with a 1mm diameter produced an average of 0.67mg THC per hit
- Joints with a 5mm diameter had a 0.51mg THC puff average
- CBD-dominant strains delivered significantly more of their main cannabinoid per puff than THC-rich varieties
This experiment challenges the conventional wisdom of selecting joints based on THC concentration alone; the size of ground-up cannabis is crucial
Delic Labs expressed interest in further exploring factors such as side stream, aerosol particle size, exhaust temperature, and particles, in addition to investigating other cannabinoids and terpenes.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this pioneering research sheds light on the intricate nuances of joint composition and provides valuable insights for optimizing the cannabis consumption experience.
