The Legal Status of Cannabis in Yukon

Adults aged 19 and older can legally buy and possess non-medical cannabis in Yukon, subject to territorial rules. Licensed private businesses now handle retail stores, online sales and delivery. The Yukon Liquor Corporation continues its wholesale role, but consumers no longer buy through the former government Cannabis Yukon online shop.

Age and Possession Limits

The ordinary public possession limit is 30 grams of dried cannabis, or its equivalent in other products. The same amount is the ordinary purchase limit per transaction. It is not a 30-gram cap on cannabis kept at home: the territory’s legal-cannabis fact sheet specifically distinguishes home storage from public possession.

Use the dried-cannabis equivalent on product labels when combining different formats. Keep stored products inaccessible to children and pets. Permission to store legally obtained cannabis does not permit unauthorized sales or remove the separate plant limit.

Buying from Licensed Private Retailers

Yukon completed its transition to private cannabis retail on October 17, 2022, when the government website stopped selling to consumers. Private online sales and delivery had been enabled earlier that year. The government’s handover announcement confirms that retail stores, online orders and delivery are now operated by licensees.

The territory’s cannabis information page lists licensed retailers. Check the current location and delivery coverage directly with the business before travelling or ordering. A seller accepting an online payment is not, on its own, evidence of a Yukon licence.

The Yukon Liquor Corporation remains the government wholesaler supplying licensed retailers, as explained in the five-year review of the cannabis legislation. Its wholesale function should not be confused with the consumer retail operations it closed.

Where Cannabis Can Be Consumed

The ordinary rule is consumption in a private residence and adjoining property, or another location specifically permitted by regulation. Parks, streets and other public places are not generally open for cannabis consumption. Buying a legal edible does not create a general exception to location restrictions.

Smoking and vaping also face specific restrictions, including in licensed childcare homes even when children are absent, and in the presence of health or social-service providers. Check the premises and applicable rules before using cannabis.

Home Growing and Housing Restrictions

Adults may grow up to four plants per household at their private residence and adjoining property, using legally obtained seeds or plant material. This is a shared household ceiling, not four plants for each resident. It is not an indoor-only territorial allowance.

Tenancy agreements and condominium rules can restrict growing or use. Yukon’s residential-tenancy information provides a starting point for tenants and landlords. Review the actual agreement before installing a grow or assuming smoking is permitted; a dispute should be addressed through the tenancy process.

Driving and Transporting Cannabis

Driving while impaired is illegal, including when cannabis is used medically. Yukon also applies a zero-tolerance alcohol-and-drug condition to Graduated Driver’s Licence holders. The territory’s driving guidance explains the distinction and the importance of planning a safe ride.

Section 56 of the Cannabis Control and Regulation Act requires cannabis in a vehicle to be in a closed container and inaccessible to everyone in the vehicle, with any prescribed packaging requirements also met. A closed package left within a passenger’s reach does not satisfy both conditions.

Do not infer permission to consume from permission to transport. Roadside and criminal consequences are separate from cannabis possession rules, and losing a licence means driving must stop until it is properly reinstated. See Yukon’s impaired-driving consequences.

Workplace and Medical Use

Yukon’s guidance requires workers to remain fit for work and recommends discussing impairment policies with the employer. Medical needs may warrant accommodation, but that process must account for the job’s safety requirements. Medical access should not be treated as blanket permission for impairment at work.

Before using cannabis, verify the seller, the consumption location and the transport arrangements. Before growing, add a check of the household plant count and housing agreement. These practical distinctions matter more than the fact of legalization alone.
