Assessing Trichomes – How to Time Your Harvest
What Are Trichomes?
Arguably, the best way to determine when your crop of cannabis plants is ready to harvest is to evaluate their trichomes. However, you must know their role before you can accurately assess these critical plant features.
Trichomes are tiny, hair-like structures on the surface of cannabis plants. They contain the majority of the plant’s cannabinoids, including THC and CBD, as well as terpenes, which give cannabis its unique aroma.
Cannabis plants have three main types of trichomes:
- Bulbous: The smallest type, not visible to the naked eye.
- Capitate-Sessile: Larger than bulbous trichomes, visible under magnification.
- Capitate-Stalked: The largest and most abundant type, easily visible, and responsible for most cannabinoid production.
Trichomes serve several purposes:
- Protection: They deter pests and herbivores with their sticky texture and strong aroma.
- UV Protection: They protect the plant from harmful UV rays.
- Moisture Retention: They help reduce water loss by trapping moisture.
While the terms “trichomes” and “resin glands” are often used interchangeably, they refer to different components of the same structure. Trichomes are the entire hair-like structures, whereas resin glands are the bulbous tips of the trichomes that produce and store cannabinoids and terpenes.
Purpose of Trichomes in Harvest Timing
Trichomes play a crucial role in determining the optimal harvest time for cannabis. Their appearance changes as the plant matures, and these changes indicate the potency and effects of the final product.
Using a Loupe to Inspect Trichomes
A loupe is a small magnifying glass that helps growers inspect trichomes closely. Here’s how to use one:
- Choose a Loupe: A 60x magnification loupe with an LED light is ideal for examination. Even better are loupes with multiple lenses that boast 30x, 60x, and even 90x magnification.
- Hold Steady: Hold the loupe close to your eye and bring the cannabis bud into focus.
- Examine Multiple Areas: Check on different parts of the plant to get an accurate assessment, as different areas can mature at different rates.
What to Look For
The first sign of a plant nearing harvest time is when it begins to look ‘frosty’ or ‘furry’. This change in appearance is owed to the rapidly developing resin glands beginning to grow and transition from clear to an opaque milky white.
In the following images, you will see a cannabis plant transition from boasting smooth green foliage to an increasing amount of trichomes, resulting in the aforementioned ‘frosty’/’furry’ appearance before finally being harvested.

Trichomes go through several stages as the plant matures. Here’s what to look for at each stage:
- Clear Resin Glands: Transparent and look like tiny glass mushrooms. These are not ready for harvest and indicate that the plant is still maturing and producing cannabinoids.
- Cloudy/Milky Resin Glands: This stage indicates peak potency. Harvesting at this stage will result in a more energetic, cerebral high.
- Amber Resin Glands: Trichomes turn amber as THC held in the resin glands begins degrading into CBN. Harvesting at this stage will produce a more sedative, body-high effect.
For many, the ideal harvest time is when roughly 10% of the resin glands have progressed to the amber stage. While preferences may differ, the stage provides a good balance between a potent product with strong medicinal qualities.
Post-Harvest Handling
Note that, after harvesting, it is critical to handle your plants gently. This is because the all-important trichomes are quite delicate, and key to providing the effects and benefits desired from your final product.
Furthermore, proper drying and curing techniques are crucial to preserving the trichomes and ensuring the quality of the final product.
Final Thoughts
While other methods exist for determining if a cannabis plant is ready to harvest, such as visually evaluating pistils, flowering duration, etc., using a loupe to assess trichomes is typically agreed upon as the most accurate and effective approach. An even better approach is to combine each method while placing an emphasis on trichome assessment
By understanding and observing the stages of development, growers can accurately determine the optimal time to harvest their cannabis plants, ensuring the desired potency and effects.
