The Rise of Private Cannabis Retail in New Brunswick, Canada

New Brunswick, Canada has undergone a significant transformation in cannabis retail, moving from a fully government-controlled model to one that embraces private competition. The shift began in 2022 when Cannabis New Brunswick (CNB) initiated a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process, allowing private retailers to apply for licenses to operate stores. This marked a pivotal moment for the province, as it opened the door for businesses like CANNABIS XPRESS to bring their expertise and customer-focused approach to the market.
At CANNABIS XPRESS, we saw this as a tremendous opportunity to expand into a province that was ready for a more competitive and accessible cannabis retail environment. In 2023, we launched our first store in New Brunswick, setting the stage for rapid growth. Over the following months, we successfully opened four locations, strategically positioned to serve different communities across the province. This expansion has positioned CANNABIS XPRESS as the largest private cannabis retailer in New Brunswick, a milestone we are incredibly proud of.
Our success is built on a simple yet effective business model—offering a curated selection of high-quality cannabis products at competitive prices, with a focus on efficiency and customer service. Unlike traditional dispensaries that can be large and complex, our stores are designed to be convenient, quick, and easy to navigate. This approach has resonated with customers looking for a seamless shopping experience without unnecessary delays or complications. Additionally, our focus on customer education ensures that consumers can make informed decisions about their cannabis purchases, fostering a responsible and knowledgeable cannabis community in New Brunswick.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to further expansion in New Brunswick. The province presents a unique opportunity for growth, and we believe that increasing our presence will not only benefit our business but also provide more consumers with access to legal, regulated cannabis. As the market continues to evolve, we will explore new locations and partnerships to strengthen our foothold in the region. Our expansion strategy includes identifying underserved areas, collaborating with local communities, and continuously adapting to regulatory changes to ensure compliance and sustainability.
New Brunswick’s decision to allow private cannabis retail has proven to be a positive step for the industry, fostering competition, improving accessibility, and driving innovation. Private retailers have introduced new business models, enhanced customer service experiences, and diversified product offerings, creating a more dynamic market. At CANNABIS XPRESS, we are excited to be part of this journey and look forward to contributing to the province’s thriving cannabis landscape for years to come.
As we continue to expand, we recognize the importance of building strong relationships with our customers and the communities we serve. Our goal is to create a welcoming and safe retail environment that reflects our commitment to responsible cannabis consumption. By staying ahead of industry trends, investing in employee training, and prioritizing customer satisfaction, we aim to set new standards in the cannabis retail space.

Recently, CNB issued five new RFQ applications for additional private cannabis retail stores, signaling continued momentum in the market. With a total of 10 private cannabis retail licenses currently granted, CANNABIS XPRESS proudly operates four of them, reinforcing our status as the leading and largest private retailer in the province.
