As metabolism continues, 11-hydroxy-THC is further broken down into 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC (THC-COOH), which is an inactive compound. This metabolite is what most drug tests look for, as it remains in the body much longer than THC itself.

  • Sweat and Hair: Small amounts of THC and its metabolites can also be released through sweat and deposited into hair follicles, contributing to their long detection window in hair tests.

This means individuals with higher body fat percentages may retain THC for longer periods, leading to extended detection times. Saliva tests are becoming more popular, especially for roadside drug screenings as well as pre-employment screenings. This test detects the presence of THC itself, rather than its metabolites.

  • Heavy use: Up to 7 days (rare cases)

Because saliva tests detect active THC, they are mainly used to determine if someone has recently consumed cannabis.

Cannabis Hair Test: The Longest Detection Time
