Soil Health and Cannabis Potency: What Science Shows

A new study1 from researchers at Penn State University has found that the quality of soil where hemp is grown can significantly influence its chemical profile — including the levels of cannabinoids and aromatic terpenes that give the plant its therapeutic potential.  The findings offer new insights into how sustainable agricultural practices can shape the future of cannabis farming and medicine.

Understanding the Study

The researchers compared two fields growing the same hemp cultivars, Tangerine and CBG Stem Cell, under nearly identical conditions — except for how the soil was prepared.  One field used cover crops and no tilling (CC) to enrich the soil naturally, while the other relied on conventional tillage (CF), a common agricultural practice that disturbs the soil.

After harvesting and analyzing the hemp flowers, the team discovered clear chemical differences between the plants grown in the two types of soil.  Using advanced testing in a Pennsylvania state-approved laboratory, they measured cannabinoids like CBD, THC, CBDA, and CBG, as well as dozens of terpenes that contribute to aroma and therapeutic effects.

Key Findings: Soil Makes a Difference

The researchers found that soil quality and cultivation methods had a measurable effect on cannabinoid and terpene levels:

  • CBD and CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) levels shifted depending on both the cultivar and soil type.  For example, Tangerine plants grown in cover-cropped soil had six times more CBDA than those from conventional soil.
  • CBG (cannabigerol), a cannabinoid known for its potential anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, was up to 3.7 times higher in plants grown in cover-cropped soil.
  • Conversely, THC levels were about six times higher in the conventionally tilled field for the Tangerine cultivar — a key concern for hemp farmers, since exceeding the legal THC threshold can make crops unsellable.
  • Terpene content — which affects the plant’s scent, flavor, and medicinal synergy — was generally higher in hemp grown in the cover-cropped field, especially for Tangerine, which had significantly greater levels of terpenes like β-myrcene and β-farnesene.

In other words, healthier, biologically active soil tended to produce hemp richer in beneficial compounds — but also more stable and predictable in its terpene composition across cultivars.

Why Soil Health Matters

Soil isn’t just dirt; it’s a living ecosystem that supports plant growth and chemistry.  In this study, the cover-cropped soil had higher organic matter, protein content, carbon levels, and microbial activity — all signs of robust soil health.  These factors can help plants absorb nutrients more efficiently and may influence how cannabinoids and terpenes are synthesized in the flower.

Cover crops like clover, vetch, and oats add nitrogen and organic material to the soil, reduce erosion, and improve moisture retention.  The result is a soil that promotes long-term fertility and stability — something especially important for hemp, which is often grown for its high-value flowers rather than its stalks or seeds.

Researchers also observed that soil health appeared to mitigate genetic differences between cultivars.  While conventionally tilled soil amplified the differences between Tangerine and CBG Stem Cell, the cover-cropped field seemed to make terpene profiles more consistent.  That kind of uniformity could be valuable for medical cannabis producers aiming for repeatable, standardized product quality.

What It Means for Cannabis Cultivation

This study is the first of its kind to examine how cover cropping and no-till farming affect the chemical makeup of outdoor-grown hemp.  It adds to a growing body of research showing that environmental conditions — including soil, light, and nutrients — can dramatically influence the plant’s biochemistry.

For cannabis growers, soil management isn’t just about yield — it’s also about quality, potency, and compliance.  Healthier soil may lead to higher levels of desirable cannabinoids like CBD and CBG, while reducing the risk of THC levels creeping above legal limits.  The findings also highlight how sustainable farming can produce superior products without synthetic fertilizers or excessive soil disturbance.

Sustainable Cannabis and Soil Health

The implications go beyond agriculture.  Healthier soil doesn’t just benefit farmers — it supports the environment and, potentially, consumers.  By using regenerative practices, growers can enhance soil biodiversity, store more carbon, and reduce runoff pollution.  These benefits align with a global movement toward climate-smart farming and sustainable medicinal plant production.

For patients and consumers, the connection between soil and plant chemistry is equally important.  Cannabinoids and terpenes don’t act in isolation; they work together to produce what scientists call the “entourage effect,” where combinations of compounds may enhance therapeutic outcomes.  Better soil health, therefore, could indirectly support the development of more balanced, effective cannabis-based medicines.

Looking Ahead

The Penn State researchers note that more work is needed to pinpoint exactly how soil characteristics influence the enzymes that convert CBG into other cannabinoids like CBD and THC.  They also call for further studies to track soil and plant chemistry over multiple growing seasons and to explore how microbial life in the soil contributes to cannabinoid production.

Still, this study delivers a clear takeaway: the ground beneath the cannabis plant plays as big a role in its power as its genetics or growing technique.  As the legal cannabis and hemp industries mature, embracing soil health could help producers grow not only greener crops but also cleaner, more therapeutic ones.
