Today, an emerging interdisciplinary field of neurotheology is helping us understand what happens in the brain during these profound experiences. Increasingly, cannabis is part of that conversation.
Often discussed only in terms of recreation or medicine, cannabis also occupies a unique place in humanity’s spiritual history. From ancient Indian texts to modern contemplative practices, cannabis has long been used to quiet the mind, heighten perception, and dissolve boundaries between self and world. Modern neuroscience now suggests these experiences may be linked to specific neural networks, particularly those governing self-referential thought, meaning-making, and emotional salience.

What Is Neurotheology?
Neurotheology, sometimes referred to as spiritual neuroscience, studies the relationship between brain activity and religious or mystical experience. Rather than attempting to explain spirituality away, neurotheology asks a more nuanced question: How does the brain participate in experiences of transcendence, awe, unity, and sacred meaning?
Using tools like functional MRI, EEG, and PET scans, researchers have observed that experiences often described as “spiritual” correlate with measurable changes in brain activity. These include altered patterns in:
- The prefrontal cortex, involved in attention and intention
- The limbic system, which governs emotion and meaning
- The parietal lobes, associated with spatial boundaries and self–other distinction
- Large-scale neural networks such as the Default Mode Network (DMN)
Neurotheology does not claim that spiritual experiences are “just brain activity.” Instead, it suggests the brain may act as a mediator or interface through which humans experience transcendence—a concept that explains the physiological consistency found in Hindu Shaivite practices and Gnostic Christian rites alike.
Cannabis enters this discussion because cannabinoids directly influence many of the same systems activated during meditation, prayer, and mystical states.
Cannabis and the Default Mode Network
One of the most important discoveries in modern neuroscience is the Default Mode Network (DMN). This is a network of interconnected brain regions active when we are not focused on the outside world. The DMN is heavily involved in self-referential thinking, such as autobiographical memory, rumination, future planning, and the ongoing narrative of “me.”
While essential for daily functioning, an overactive DMN is associated with anxiety, depression, and rigid ego identity. Interestingly, many spiritual traditions aim to quiet this internal narrator through meditation or prayer. Neuroimaging studies show that experienced meditators exhibit reduced DMN activity during deep contemplative states.
Ego Dissolution and Self-Referential Processing
Cannabis, particularly THC, appears to modulate this same network. Research1 suggests that THC reduces functional connectivity within the DMN, temporarily softening the boundaries of the self. Consumers often describe this as:
- A sense of ego dissolution
- Reduced self-judgment and rumination
- Heightened present-moment awareness
- A feeling of unity with surroundings
These effects closely mirror those reported in participants undergoing psychedelic-assisted therapy—a cornerstone of the Modern Entheogenic Revival—though cannabis typically produces a gentler, more accessible version of the experience. This DMN modulation may explain why cannabis has been used historically to support contemplative or devotional practices.
Mystical Experience, Awe, and the Entheogenic Brain
Mystical experiences share common psychological features across cultures. These often include feelings of oneness or unity, profound awe, and a feeling of encountering ultimate reality. From a neurobiological perspective, these experiences involve shifts in how the brain processes meaning and salience. Cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a regulatory network that plays a critical role in mood, memory, perception, and emotional integration.
CB1 receptors, densely concentrated in the brain, help explain why cannabis can intensify sensory experience while simultaneously softening fear and self-focus. When these systems are modulated together, the brain may become more receptive to experiences of awe and interconnectedness. This neurological “receptivity” provides the bridge back to the Stoned Ape Theory; while McKenna’s evolutionary narrative is debated, the capacity for these plants to rewire neural connectivity is a proven biological fact.
Cannabis as a Gateway to Contemplative States
Unlike classical psychedelics, cannabis rarely overwhelms the perceptual system. This may be why it has historically been paired with structured practices such as meditation, chanting, prayer, yoga, or ritual fasting.
In these contexts, cannabis does not replace spiritual discipline. It amplifies it. From a neurotheological perspective, cannabis may increase interoceptive awareness, drawing attention inward. It can also enhance sensory presence, making ritual more immersive, and reduce cognitive rigidity, allowing symbolic or mythic thinking—essential for the Rastafari reasoning session.
Science Meets Spirit: Toward a Unified Model of Consciousness
Neurotheology invites a reframe of the long-standing tension between science and spirituality. Instead of asking whether mystical experiences are “real” or “imagined,” researchers are increasingly asking what they do to the brain, to behavior, and to well-being. Cannabis challenges conventional categories, as it is a medicinal compound, a psychoactive substance, a contemplative aid, and a potential spiritual catalyst.
When substances like cannabis modulate the brain’s filter, especially in combination with intention, the resulting experiences may feel expansive, meaningful, and deeply real to the individual. Neurotheology does not claim to define the sacred. Instead, it offers language for how biological systems participate in humanity’s oldest questions of who am I, what am I connected to, and what is meaningful?
