CBD Shows Anticancer Potential Across Multiple Canine Tumors

A new systematic review posted online in Frontiers in Veterinary Science finds that CBD consistently suppresses cancer cell growth across multiple canine tumor types — including lymphoma, osteosarcoma, and mammary cancer — though every study feeding into that conclusion is preclinical, and the review found no clinical trials in dogs have followed from that cellular evidence yet.
The review, accepted in April 2026 by researchers at the University of Chile’s Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, set out to compile the scattered body of CBD-and-canine-cancer research into a single accounting of what the evidence actually shows. Authors Francisca J. Medina and Cristian G. Torres concluded that while the picture is still early, it is consistent enough to call CBD a credible anticancer candidate in veterinary oncology.
What the preclinical evidence shows
The studies reviewed are, without exception, laboratory-based — cell cultures and cellular models, not clinical trials in living patients. That’s a meaningful constraint, and the authors are clear about it. But within those limits, the pattern across six tumor categories is notable.
In lymphoma, mammary cancer, glioma, prostate cancer, osteosarcoma, and urothelial carcinoma cell lines, CBD showed two recurring effects: it slowed or stopped cancer cell proliferation (the antiproliferative effect) and triggered programmed cell death (the proapoptotic effect). The mechanisms aren’t fully characterized, but the review identified signaling pathways — including ERK, JNK, and caspase cascades — among the routes through which CBD appears to act.
The drug-combination data is more complicated. Some studies found synergistic effects when CBD was paired with chemotherapy agents, meaning the combination worked better than either compound alone. Others found antagonistic interactions — CBD and the conventional drug partially undermining each other. Earlier work from Cornell-affiliated researchers published in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology illustrates the nuance: CBD and vincristine produced additive or synergistic antiproliferative results across five canine cell lines, but results with doxorubicin were less clear-cut. That kind of variability matters for veterinarians considering CBD as an adjunct to whatever chemotherapy protocol a patient is already receiving.
On safety, the evidence is more settled. The review’s authors note that CBD has been shown to be well-tolerated in dogs across multiple studies — a prerequisite for any clinical utility. What’s less settled is what concentration actually reaches tumor tissue at effective levels, and how formulations affect delivery — two standardization problems the review identifies as necessary preconditions before clinical trial design becomes feasible.
The clinical translation gap
The picture here is familiar to anyone following cannabinoid research in oncology: the preclinical signal is real, but the path from cell line to patient is long, and most of those steps haven’t been taken yet.
Studies have been appearing since around 2015, the authors note, but no clinical trials in dogs have emerged from that cellular evidence base. The review’s conclusion calls explicitly for work to standardize concentrations and formulations first — without that standardization, results can’t be compared across labs or assembled into a dose rationale capable of supporting a trial protocol.
This matters partly because canine cancer research carries a particular dual relevance. Dogs develop many of the same cancers as humans — including osteosarcoma, lymphoma, and glioma — and because they share the human environment and have shorter disease timelines, they sometimes serve as informative preclinical models for human oncology. A maturing CBD-in-canine-oncology evidence base could have implications beyond veterinary medicine.
A 2025 review in Animals examining the endocannabinoid system across companion animal oncology reached similar conclusions: cannabinoids show mechanistic promise, synergies with conventional drugs are plausible, but clinical data remains the missing piece. Earlier MyCannabis reporting covered a study showing CBD reduced aggression in senior dogs, part of a separate behavioral and safety evidence base for CBD in canines. Preclinical evidence for cannabis compounds in neuroblastoma has shown similar promise against the same clinical-translation hurdle.
The Frontiers review doesn’t overstate its case. The language throughout is “potential” and “highlighted by” — not established. That’s the appropriate framing for a literature that is credible but still entirely preclinical. For veterinarians whose clients are asking about CBD as part of a cancer care plan, the honest answer from this evidence base is that the mechanism looks plausible and the safety profile looks acceptable — but there’s no clinical trial yet to say what dose does what in an actual patient.
