Socrates Rosenfeld, Co-Founder and CEO of Jane Technologies – Interview Series

Given that point of sale and analytics-collecting technology is just as important in the cannabis industry as it is in other industries, the sales and retail management platforms sector of the cannabis industry is certainly an interesting one. Along with inventory management and marketing opportunities, these interfaces can generate data based on sales trends and other retail trends worth paying attention to. One of those platforms that is now being utilized in nearly 40 different state markets is Jane Technologies. For a better understanding of these platforms and their usefulness in such a heavily regulated industry, mycannabis.com had the pleasure of speaking with Socrates Rosenfeld, Co-Founder and CEO of Jane Technologies.

What inspired you to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point and serve in the US Army? What were some notable places that you were deployed to or traveled to on behalf of the military? It looks like your career in the military was quite illustrious.

I was inspired by a desire to help people and to challenge myself at the highest level. West Point offered both the discipline, education, and experience that helped shape me into the leader I am today. As an Apache helicopter pilot, I deployed to Korea and Iraq, and trained in places around the world that tested both my resilience and my ability to lead under pressure.

What were the most crucial lessons in team management and organization that you learned while serving in the Army, which later became useful in your entrepreneurial career?

The Army taught me that trust is one of the most essential assets any team can have. In combat you have to rely on the person next to you with complete confidence, and I have carried that same principle into building Jane. As a company, we empower our people to make decisions, we hold ourselves accountable, and we stay disciplined in executing our mission to build trust with our partners, customers, and each other.

So what subjects did you mainly study while obtaining your MBA at the prestigious MIT Sloan School of Management, and how did it prepare you for founding an e-commerce technology company?

At Sloan, I focused on entrepreneurship, organizational design, and technology. The program helped me understand how to take big, complex systems and make them work seamlessly in a “win-win” manner, which is exactly what Jane does for cannabis retail. It also gave me the confidence to take an idea rooted in personal experience and scale it into a platform that now powers thousands of businesses across the country

From a military service member’s standpoint, what is the importance of being a Tillman Scholar, and why do you feel that it was an honor to receive a Tillman scholarship?

Being a Tillman Scholar means carrying forward the values of service, leadership, and integrity that Pat Tillman embodied. It was an incredible honor to join a community of veterans and scholars who are committed to making an impact beyond their time in uniform. That spirit of service has guided me in building Jane as a company rooted in purpose.

What types of projects were you mostly consulted on while working for McKinsey, and how did the project types vary during your time in that role?

At McKinsey I worked on a wide range of projects, from corporate strategy to operational improvement across industries like retail and technology. The exposure forced me to learn quickly, adapt to new environments, and solve problems with precision. That ability to simplify complexity has been critical in building Jane’s platform for one of the most complex industries in America.

What led to the creation of Jane Technologies, and why did you want to found such a company? Did you have any initial concerns about founding a business that caters so heavily to cannabis businesses?

After leaving the Army, cannabis helped me heal and reconnect with my loved ones, but safe access was a real challenge. In Massachusetts it was still illegal, so I had to meet a dealer in a parking lot without knowing the quality of what I was buying. That frustration planted the idea for a platform that could bring trust and transparency to the cannabis shopping experience. After earning my MBA and moving to California, I saw the chance to combine my passion for technology with the plant and partnered with my co-founders to start the company. Together, we built Jane as a trusted platform that would empower consumers, retailers, and brands across the industry.

How does Jane Technologies’ interface assist the many duties of a cannabis dispensary, and how does it increase the efficiency of regular dispensary operations?

Jane acts as the digital backbone for dispensaries. Our universal Jane Catalog standardizes millions of SKUs across thousands of stores, ensuring consistent product data, verified reviews, and accurate inventory. With MyHigh, our AI-powered personalization engine, retailers can present shoppers with tailored product recommendations that boost conversion and personalize the cannabis shopping experience. Jane Premium further enhances the experience with customizable menus, integrated payments, and powerful analytics that free up staff and allow dispensaries to focus on their customers, while maintaining a fully-automated digital storefront.

Since Jane is in 39 states and counting, and the state cannabis regulations themselves can fluctuate somewhat, how does Jane ensure that the platform is operating in a compliant manner with the regulations of the state market the platform is being used in?

Compliance is not an afterthought for Jane, it is baked into everything we do. Our platform integrates directly with state-mandated tracking systems and adapts in real-time to reflect local regulations. Whether it is product labeling, purchasing limits, or age verification, Jane ensures that dispensaries can operate with confidence while focusing on their customers.

How does Jane Technologies provide marketing/advertising services for their clients’ products, and how is this marketing successful versus more traditional advertising methods?

Jane provides proprietary, compliant, and performance-driven marketing solutions that meet consumers from the point of discovery through the point of purchase. We offer on-menu merchandising and off-menu advertising that connect products with the right audience at the right time. With Jane Gold, brands can showcase personalized products and incentives through a consumer program that integrates seamlessly into dispensary menus, creating an experience that feels curated rather than impersonal. Complemented by the Jane Catalog, which organizes millions of SKUs, we also provide our advertising partners with full-funnel attribution, giving them a clear and comprehensive view of what drives engagement, loyalty, and conversion. As a result, advertising with Jane becomes a natural extension of our ecommerce and in-store platform, driving more customers, sales, and repeat purchases compared to traditional channels.

Because Jane utilizes “proprietary artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies,” how is the interface being consistently updated and adapting based on those findings from the internal AI technologies?

Jane has spent nearly a decade investing in data structuring and personalization technology, and those efforts come to life through MyHigh. The AI engine analyzes millions of data points to refine recommendations for consumers, optimize inventory for retailers, and surface insights for brands. These tools adapt in real time, making the entire ecosystem smarter and more efficient every day. By pairing this intelligence with offerings like Jane Premium and Jane Gold, we provide a retail experience that is personalized, compliant, and continuously improving.

Looking ahead, how do you envision Jane Technologies’ platform evolving over the next few years? If a federal cannabis reform is eventually implemented, do you think Jane’s technology could be utilized on a national/federal level?

We believe Jane is on track to become the digital infrastructure that powers cannabis commerce nationwide and beyond. As new features like MyHigh continue to scale, consumers will enjoy a level of personalization similar to what they experience when they listen to music and watch content. If federal reform happens, Jane is uniquely positioned to unify fragmented state markets into one trusted and compliant national ecosystem.
