Bangkok, September 15, 2023 – Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin delivered a clear message today, voicing his opposition to the recreational use of cannabis in the country. However, he affirmed his administration's commitment to maintaining policies that support its medical applications. This was first reported by Thailand-based Pattaya Mail.

Thailand made headlines last year as the first Southeast Asian nation to decriminalize cannabis, a move aimed at reshaping the nation's approach to the plant. Nevertheless, just one week after the decriminalization, a set of stringent regulations was issued to prevent its unregulated use, particularly among children.

The ruling Pheu Thai party, which heads an 11-party coalition government established in August, has consistently emphasized its stance on cannabis. Their largest coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai party, played a pivotal role in pushing for the decriminalization of cannabis during the previous administration. Both parties have consistently advocated for the medicinal use of cannabis while opposing recreational consumption.

Thailand's cannabis industry is on the cusp of significant growth and is projected to reach a valuation of up to US$1.2 billion in the coming years. The nation has witnessed a surge in the establishment of cannabis-related businesses, particularly in popular tourist destinations.

Addressing the issue, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin remarked, “Drug abuse is a significant challenge facing our nation, and it has not received the attention it deserves.” He further emphasized, “Cannabis must be used solely for medical purposes, in accordance with our policies.” As Thailand navigates the complexities of cannabis legislation and regulation, the Prime Minister's statements reaffirm the government's commitment to striking a balance between reaping the economic benefits of the cannabis industry and ensuring its responsible use for medical purposes.
