The Legality of Cannabis in Minnesota

mm
Updated on

Medical use of cannabis was legalized in the state of Minnesota in 2014. The decriminalization of recreational cannabis that took effect in 1976 is still in place. The growing and transportation of cannabis are allowed for medical use only.

The bill legalizing medical cannabis for treating nine “severe” cases was signed into law by Governor Mark Dayton in May 2014. Program registration started on June 1, 2015, and actual distribution on July 1, 2015.

The Michigan medical marijuana bill is considered one of the most restrictive because of the limit it has placed on the qualifying conditions. However, there has been a slight increase in the number of qualifying conditions recently.

To sign into the medical cannabis program in Michigan means you have one of the below conditions:

  • Cancer is accompanied by severe/chronic pain, severe vomiting, nausea, or cachexia which is severe wasting
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Tourette Syndrome
  • (ALS) Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Seizures, such as that characteristic of epilepsy
  • Muscle spasms that are severe and persistent, including those that are characteristic of MS (multiple sclerosis)
  • IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease), inclusive of Crohn’s disease
  • Terminal illness, with indications of less than 1 year life expectancy if the illness or treatment for it causes nausea or vomiting severely, chronic or severe pain, or severe wasting or Cachexia
  • Intractable pain
  • Autism
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Intractable pain (added in 2016)
  • PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder)(Added in August 2017)
  • Sickle cell disease (effective August 2021)
  • Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (effective August 2021)

Individuals meeting these medical criteria can only access cannabis legally in the forms of pills, liquid, or a vaporized delivery method which does not require using dried leaves or any other plant form. There is also a task force in place to conduct impact assessments of medical marijuana therapeutic research as well as provide for criminal as well as civil protestations involving parties of the registry program.

Lydia K. (Bsc. RN) is a cannabis writer, which, considering where you’re reading this, makes perfect sense. Currently, she is a regular writer for Mace Media. In the past, she has written for MyBud, RX Leaf & Dine Magazine (Canada), CBDShopy (UK) and Cannavalate & Pharmadiol (Australia). She is best known for writing epic news articles and medical pieces. Occasionally, she deviates from news and science and creates humorous articles. And boy doesn't she love that! She equally enjoys ice cream, as should all right-thinking people.
