Why Highly Sensitive People Use Cannabis

People described as highly sensitive are often assumed to be unusually vulnerable to cannabis misuse. The logic seems straightforward: if someone experiences noise, social pressure, emotional shifts, or other stimuli more intensely, cannabis may become a way to quiet an overwhelming world. New research suggests that this explanation is too simple.
A study1 of young adults in Quebec found that sensory processing sensitivity was not associated with being more likely to use cannabis, using it more frequently, or reporting more misuse symptoms. Sensitivity was instead connected to the reasons some participants used cannabis. Those reasons ranged from coping and socializing to enhancing enjoyable experiences and exploring creative or introspective states.
The distinction matters. Frequency can show how often someone consumes cannabis, but motive helps explain the function that consumption serves. Two people who use equally often may have different vulnerabilities, expectations, and support needs. By looking beyond a personality label and asking what cannabis is doing for the individual, researchers and clinicians may gain a more useful picture of behavior.
What Is Sensory Processing Sensitivity?
Sensory processing sensitivity, or SPS, is a personality trait involving heightened responsiveness to internal and environmental stimuli. It is often described outside research settings as being a highly sensitive person. This does not constitute a psychiatric diagnosis, and it should not be confused with a sensory processing disorder.
The researchers measured SPS using the 27-item Highly Sensitive Person Scale. They considered an overall sensitivity score and two distinct dimensions. Low sensory threshold and ease of excitation, combined as LST/EOE, reflect unpleasant sensory arousal and becoming easily overwhelmed. Aesthetic sensitivity, or AES, reflects openness and responsiveness to positive experiences, including art, beauty, and other rewarding stimuli.
This separation is central to the study. Sensitivity is not solely about distress. Receptiveness to positive experiences may shape cannabis use differently from sensitivity to overstimulation.
How Researchers Studied Cannabis Motives
The study included 195 participants from the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. All were approximately 23 years old when assessed in 2020 or 2021. Of the broader sample, 96 reported cannabis use and were included in the models examining frequency, misuse symptoms, and motives.
Participants reported cannabis frequency through an item from the Daily Sessions, Frequency, Age of Onset, and Quantity of Cannabis Use Inventory. Potential problems were measured with the six-item Cannabis Abuse Screening Test. Researchers also used an adapted Marijuana Motives Measure covering five common reasons for consumption:
- Enhancement, or intensifying positive experiences
- Socializing and improving interactions
- Conforming or fitting in with others
- Coping with distressing psychological states
- Expansion, including creativity and self-understanding
The analyses controlled for sex assigned at birth, education, partner status, and whether questionnaires were completed before or during the COVID-19 pandemic. The researchers also applied a multiple-comparison correction, an important safeguard when testing many possible relationships.
Sensitivity Did Not Predict Cannabis Misuse
The clearest result was also the most counterintuitive. Overall SPS was not significantly associated with whether someone used cannabis, how frequently cannabis users consumed it, or how many misuse symptoms they reported. LST/EOE was likewise unrelated to frequency and misuse symptoms.
Aesthetic sensitivity initially showed associations with greater frequency and misuse symptoms. However, the association with misuse did not remain significant after correction for multiple comparisons. The frequency relationship survived that correction, but the authors summarized the broader pattern cautiously: sensitivity itself did not indicate greater or lesser misuse risk.
This finding challenges the idea that people who become overstimulated easily inevitably use cannabis as a form of escape. It also warns against treating a highly sensitive personality as a screening shortcut. Established factors such as age of initiation, potency, daily or near-daily consumption, mental health history, and functional impairment remain more directly relevant to risk. This broader context is important when discussing cannabis and psychosis risks, which are not distributed evenly among consumers.
Different Forms of Sensitivity Pointed to Different Motives

The table reveals why collapsing all sensitivity into one score can obscure useful information. Participants with greater LST/EOE were more likely to report social and conformity motives. This may reflect discomfort in demanding social settings, a desire to reduce friction, or pressure to participate. It does not prove cannabis relieved overstimulation, but it identifies situations in which social expectations may matter.
Aesthetic sensitivity produced a different pattern. It was associated with enhancement and expansion motives, the desire to intensify enjoyment, deepen self-understanding, or facilitate creative experiences. That finding fits a trait defined partly by openness to positive stimuli. It does not demonstrate that cannabis improves creativity. Instead, it shows that participants with higher aesthetic sensitivity were more likely to expect or seek those experiences.
Overall SPS was associated with social, coping, and expansion motives. This wider spread helps explain why a single narrative about self-medication is inadequate. A recent review of why people use cannabis similarly emphasizes that motives are varied and that they matter for understanding outcomes.
Why Motive May Matter More Than a Personality Label
The study’s most useful contribution is not a new label for cannabis consumers. It is a reminder that behavior must be interpreted in context. Consumption motivated by conformity may signal difficulty setting boundaries in a peer group. Social motives may reflect expectations that cannabis makes interactions easier. Coping motives may point toward emotional distress. Enhancement and expansion motives may arise from a pursuit of pleasure, novelty, introspection, or creativity.
These pathways can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A generic message to consume less may miss the benefit a person believes cannabis provides. A targeted conversation can ask what precedes use, what outcome is expected, and what costs follow. This makes prevention and treatment more precise.
For someone using cannabis to manage social pressure, helpful strategies might include assertiveness, planning for overstimulating environments, and ways to socialize without consuming. For someone seeking expansion or enhancement, alternatives could include creative practice, mindfulness, or sensory activities. If coping is dominant, the relevant issue may be the underlying distress rather than sensitivity alone.
Current cannabis and mental health guidance also cautions that using cannabis for stress, anxiety, or depression does not mean it improves mental health over time, particularly with daily or near-daily use. Motivation is therefore a starting point for assessment, not proof of benefit or safety.
What the Study Cannot Tell Us
The results should be interpreted within clear limits. This was a cross-sectional study, so it cannot determine whether sensitivity shapes motives, cannabis use changes how people report sensitivity, or another factor influences both. All measures were self-reported, creating potential recall and shared-method bias.
The sample was also small, especially the 96-person cannabis-user subgroup. Participants were more highly educated than the general population, nearly two-thirds were assigned female at birth, and everyone came from one Quebec longitudinal cohort. The findings may not transfer to more diverse populations or clinical groups experiencing severe cannabis-related problems.
Crucially, the researchers measured frequency but not quantity, THC potency, cannabinoid composition, product type, or route of administration. Someone using a low-dose product monthly and someone consuming a high-potency concentrate monthly occupy the same broad frequency category while facing very different exposure. Future studies need more precise product and dose data, repeated assessments over time, and larger samples capable of testing whether particular motives predict later harm.
A Better Framework for Understanding Cannabis Use
The findings argue against assuming that a highly sensitive person is inherently predisposed to cannabis misuse. Sensitivity appears more informative when researchers examine its dimensions and connect them to motives rather than treating it as a simple risk marker.
This has implications beyond SPS. Cannabis research often relies on categories such as user versus non-user or occasional versus frequent user. Those categories are useful, but incomplete. Asking why a person consumes can reveal whether cannabis is being used for belonging, emotional regulation, pleasure, creativity, or several functions at once.
That principle may also improve emerging interventions. Research into potential treatments for cannabis addiction is exploring new biological tools, but any treatment still operates within a person’s psychological and social environment. Reducing craving alone may not address peer pressure, sensory overwhelm, or the search for creative engagement.
The practical takeaway is not that motives replace measures of frequency, potency, or impairment. It is that they add explanatory depth. For highly sensitive young adults, that depth reveals a varied picture: no clear elevation in misuse, but meaningful differences in what some users seek from cannabis. Understanding those differences could help replace broad assumptions with interventions matched to the person.
