Cannabis & Me Study: £2.5M London Brain Research
With an estimated 200 million cannabis users worldwide, researchers at King’s College London have launched the Cannabis & Me Study1, a £2.5 million investigation into how cannabis affects the brain. Funded by the UK’s Medical Research Council, this project aims to provide data that can guide safer, more effective prescribing of medical cannabis.
Why the Study Matters
For decades, public perception of cannabis has been shaped by prohibition-era rhetoric. In the 20th century, Harry Anslinger — one of the most vocal opponents of cannabis — made numerous inflammatory statements, including:
- “Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”
- “You smoke a joint and you are likely to kill your brother.”
- “Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its user’s instant insanity, criminality, and death.”
- “No one knows, when he places a marijuana cigarette to his lips, whether they will become a joyous reveler in a musical heaven, a mad insensate, a calm philosopher, or a murderer.”
While such claims have long been debunked, lingering stigma still influences policy and medical practice. As cannabis use becomes more accepted worldwide, scientific evidence is key to replacing outdated narratives with facts.
Goals of the Cannabis & Me Study
The study will recruit 6,000 adults from London between the ages of 18 and 45. Participants will include both regular cannabis users and those who have used cannabis no more than three times in the past. All volunteers must complete an online survey to determine eligibility.
Lead researcher Dr. Marta Di Forti explains: “Our study aims to provide data and tools that can make physicians in the UK and across the world more confident, where appropriate, in prescribing cannabis safely.”
