However, a new study1 suggests that another overlooked part of the plant, the roots, may hold powerful health benefits, particularly in combating inflammation. Researchers recently explored hemp’s adventitious roots (roots grown in a lab from plant tissue) and found that they produce compounds with remarkable anti-inflammatory and immune-balancing effects. Even more exciting, these root extracts may also help the body by influencing how immune cells behave, opening the door to potential new therapies for many inflammation-driven illnesses.

Why Inflammation Matters

Inflammation is the body’s natural defense system, helping us fight infections and heal injuries. But when inflammation goes into overdrive, it can contribute to serious conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, asthma, cardiovascular problems, and even neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Finding safe ways to calm harmful inflammation without shutting down the immune system entirely is one of the biggest goals in modern medicine.

How Researchers Tested Hemp Root Extracts

The researchers grew hemp roots in controlled lab conditions and then created extracts using three different solvents: methanol, chloroform, and hexane. These extracts were tested on immune cells to see if they could reduce inflammation, and to check if they were safe or harmful.

The results were clear:

  • The methanol extract (MeOH-E) was the safest and most effective. It significantly reduced inflammatory signals in immune cells without causing major harm.
  • The chloroform and hexane extracts showed more toxic effects, sometimes damaging the cells.

What the Researchers Found

The methanol hemp root extract showed several important effects on immune cells, including:

Lowering Inflammatory Signals

It reduced the release of “pro-inflammatory cytokines,” which are the chemical messengers that drive swelling, pain, and immune overreaction. In particular, it calmed down TNF-α, IL-6, IL-12, and IL-1β, all of which play roles in chronic inflammatory conditions.

Balancing Immune Cell Behavior

Dendritic cells, which act like “messengers” in the immune system, usually mature when they detect a threat and then activate T cells to mount a response. The hemp root extract kept these cells in a calmer, less mature state. That means fewer overactive T cells, and less risk of runaway inflammation.

Targeting Inflammatory Pathways

The extract switched off two major internal pathways (NF-κB and MAPK) that are known to fuel inflammation. By calming these pathways, the extract essentially told the immune system to stop overreacting.

Comparison to Leaf Extracts

When compared to extracts from hemp leaves, the root extract actually performed better at reducing inflammation. This suggests the roots could be an underappreciated source of healing compounds.

Why Hemp Roots Could Matter for Inflammation

If future studies confirm these findings, hemp root extracts could one day play a role in managing conditions where inflammation causes harm. That includes:

  • Autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus

One important part of the research is that not all extracts were safe. The chloroform and hexane versions showed cytotoxic effects, meaning they damaged or killed cells at certain doses. This is a reminder that while hemp has incredible potential, how it’s processed matters just as much as the plant itself. “Natural” doesn’t always mean harmless, so the methanol extract’s safety is what makes this study especially promising.

What’s Next?

So far, the research has only been done in the lab, using cells grown outside of the body. That means there’s still a lot to learn before hemp root extracts can be used in people. The next steps will include:

  • Testing in animal models to confirm safety and effectiveness
  • Identifying which specific compounds are responsible for the benefits
  • Developing ways to deliver these extracts, whether as supplements, medicines, or even topical treatments
  • Eventually, human clinical trials will be needed to see how well they work in real-world conditions
