Can Hemp Seed Oil Aid Wound Healing?

Chronic wounds remain a difficult challenge in medicine, affecting quality of life and burdening healthcare systems worldwide. A new study1 published in Narra J tested whether hemp seed oil, long valued as a nutrient-rich extract of Cannabis sativa, could accelerate wound healing in animal models.
The results were striking: hemp seed oil not only reduced wound size more quickly but also improved epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and blood vessel growth compared to both saline and even chloramphenicol, a standard antibiotic ointment.
What the Study Tested
Researchers at Universitas Syiah Kuala in Indonesia divided 36 mice into three groups: one received only saline, another received chloramphenicol ointment, and the third was treated with hemp seed oil applied twice daily.
Over 21 days, the team monitored wound closure by examining size reduction, scab and new skin formation, and microscopic tissue changes. Mice were examined on days 3, 7, 14, and 21 to capture how hemp seed oil influenced each stage of the healing process.
What the Study Found
By day 14, the hemp seed oil group showed much faster healing than both control groups. Wound size had shrunk dramatically, with healing rates exceeding 92%, and new skin appeared earlier. Microscopic analysis revealed thicker epithelial layers, more robust granulation tissue, and by day 21, significantly greater vascularization—evidence of new blood vessel growth—than in either the antibiotic or saline groups.
In essence, hemp seed oil supported not just surface closure but also the deeper biological processes needed for durable repair.
