How Medical Cannabis Helps Chronic Pain from Hypermobility

Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders (HSD) and Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) are connective tissue disorders. They are often characterized by joint instability, chronic pain, and a host of other symptoms that can become severe enough that they reduce quality of life and can even become debilitating. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to managing symptoms of HSD/hEDS-associated, primarily chronic pain, are often inadequate. This results in patients having to endure unresolved discomfort and impaired daily functioning.
Promisingly, a recent study1 published through the UK Medical Cannabis Registry (UKMCR) shed new light on the potential for what it calls ‘cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs)’ to improve pain management and the overall well-being of patients diagnosed with these disorders.
Details of the Study
The study evaluated 161 patients already diagnosed with either HSD or hEDS who were prescribed CBMPs. From there, their clinical outcomes were tracked for over 18 months.
During this time, patients completed validated self-reported assessments, which involved monitoring changes in pain, sleep, anxiety, and overall quality of life. These assessments were collected at the onset of the study, in addition to 1, 3, 6, 12, and 18 months. The purpose of this was to allow researchers to determine whether the consistent use of CBMPs was associated with measurable improvements in chronic pain symptoms and related challenges.
By following the same patients over time without including a control group, this case series offers real-world insights that can guide future clinical trials and provide clinicians with preliminary data to support and tailor treatment decisions.
Promising Results
So what did the researchers find? Thankfully, results were promising, with the data revealing a statistically significant improvement across nearly all monitored symptoms. For example:
- Pain Relief: Significant reductions in pain scores were observed at every follow-up point. At 18 months, 18–25% of patients reported clinically meaningful pain reduction.
- Improved Quality of Life: EQ-5D-5L scores showed better mobility, reduced discomfort, and enhanced daily function.
- Better Sleep and Mental Health: Sleep quality scores rose meaningfully, and anxiety symptoms decreased (GAD-7 scores improved in over 25% of patients).
Building on already impressive results, it was found that the CBMPs even offered sustained Benefits – meaning that many of these improvements were sustained for the full 18 months, highlighting the potential of CBMPs for long-term symptom management.
Notably, former cannabis users were more likely to experience significant pain relief, possibly due to familiarity with cannabinoids or differing tolerance thresholds.
Safety Profile and Adverse Events
While cannabis is amazingly versatile in what it has to offer, nothing comes without a cost. In this case, among the 161 patients, 31.06% reported one or more adverse events (AEs). However, it should be noted that most AEs were moderate in severity, with no life-threatening or disabling events recorded. The most common complaints included:
- Headache (27%)
- Fatigue (24%)
- Nausea (21%)
- Somnolence and lethargy
When compared to traditional chronic pain medications—particularly opioids—the side effect profile of cannabis was relatively mild and manageable.
Cannabis: A Versatile and Safer Therapeutic Tool
This study further emphasizes the remarkable versatility of medical cannabis. Patients experienced not just pain relief but also improvements in sleep, mood, mobility, and overall well-being. Unlike opioids or other high-risk pain medications, cannabis has shown the ability to alleviate a wide variety of symptoms without posing the same risk of dependence, overdose, or systemic damage.
Medical cannabis targets the endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors throughout the body involved in regulating pain, mood, appetite, and immune function. This mechanism enables cannabis to address both nociceptive and neuropathic pain, as well as issues like insomnia and anxiety – symptoms that often coexist in chronic pain conditions like HSD/hEDS.
The study also referenced past findings where cannabis helped patients reduce or eliminate high-dose opioids, further reinforcing its harm-reduction potential.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this study has provided even more compelling evidence that cannabis-based medicinal products may offer sustained, multi-faceted relief for individuals suffering from pain due to many conditions – including those with hypermobility-related chronic pain. While not a cure-all, medical cannabis presents a safer, more versatile alternative to conventional medications, especially in populations where traditional therapies have failed.
As cannabis research continues to expand, so too does the possibility of reshaping chronic pain treatment with a plant that, while ancient, holds modern promise.
