Walk into almost any dispensary, and you’ll still hear a familiar question: “Do you want an indica or a sativa?” It sounds scientific and feels intuitive, but modern cannabis research is making one thing increasingly clear: those labels do not describe what consumers think they do.

A growing body of genomic and biochemical evidence shows that cannabis effects and aromas are not dictated by broad plant categories, but by a far more complex system of independently regulated compounds, especially terpenes. One recent study is helping dismantle the myth in a particularly compelling way. Let’s dive into the research and uncover what the terms indica and sativa truly mean.

The Origin of Indica and Sativa

The terms indica and sativa began as botanical classifications, not consumer effect labels. Historically, they referred to observable plant traits including height, leaf shape, and growth patterns. Sativa cannabis plants are tall with narrow leaves, while indica cannabis plants are shorter and bushier with broad leaves.

Over time, those physical distinctions were repurposed into simplified expectations about how a strain might feel. “Indica” became synonymous with relaxation and “sativa” was associated with energy. The problem is that this translation was never grounded in robust biochemical evidence, and today’s research is exposing just how unreliable it really is.

Terpenes: Driving Cannabis Effects

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds responsible for the distinctive scents of cannabis, but their role goes far beyond fragrance. These molecules influence how cannabinoids such as THC and CBD interact with the body and produce an array of effects, ultimately shaping the overall experience.

Researchers identified 227 volatile terpenes across multiple cultivars, including dozens of mono- and sesquiterpenes, each showing variation depending on plant tissue, development stage, and genetic background.

This level of diversity alone challenges the idea that cannabis can be meaningfully grouped into simple categories, but the most important takeaway lies in how these compounds are produced.

The Genetics of Terpene Production

At the genetic level, terpene production is controlled by a large and diverse family of enzymes known as terpene synthases (TPS). The study identified 41 full-length TPS genes and revealed significant expansion and variation across cannabis genomes.

What this means in practical terms is that terpene expression is not rigidly tied to cannabinoid content. While both systems share parts of the same metabolic foundation, their regulation diverges in meaningful ways. Different cultivars can produce similar terpene profiles through entirely different genetic pathways, and those profiles can shift depending on growth stage and environmental conditions.

The chemistry that shapes aroma and effects is far more independent and dynamic than previously assumed.

The PK vs. GG Finding

One of the most compelling findings from the study involves terpene-based clustering. When researchers grouped cultivars by their aromatic profiles, a balanced THC:CBD cultivar known as PK clustered alongside a high-THC cultivar, GG.

This is a critical insight.

Despite having very different cannabinoid compositions, these two cultivars shared similar terpene “fingerprints.” That means their aroma profiles and aspects of their effects were more closely related to each other than to other plants with similar THC or CBD levels.

This observation reinforces a key point: terpene expression operates under genetic controls that are not dictated by cannabinoid chemotype. Aroma does not reliably follow THC concentration, and neither does user experience.

Why Indica and Sativa Do Not Matter

Once you understand how independently these systems function, the limitations of traditional labels become obvious. Two products labeled “indica” can produce entirely different sensory and experiential outcomes, while something marketed as a “sativa” may feel calming depending on its terpene profile.

Decades of hybridization have further blurred any meaningful genetic distinctions between these categories. What remains is a labeling system that persists more out of habit than scientific accuracy.

What consumers are actually responding to is a layered interaction between terpene composition, cannabinoid ratios, and a range of minor compounds that all contribute to the plant’s overall profile.

Terpene-Based Classification

As research evolves, a more accurate framework is beginning to take shape; one based on terpene-driven clustering rather than legacy labels. Instead of categorizing cannabis by plant type, this approach groups cultivars according to their dominant aromatic compounds and overall chemical signatures.

This shift better reflects the biological reality outlined in the study. Terpene synthase genes expand, diversify, and express differently across cultivars, creating a complex and dynamic spectrum of aromas and effects that cannot be simply reduced to indica or sativa.

What This Means for Consumers

For consumers, this represents a shift toward more informed decision-making. Rather than relying on broad and often misleading labels, attention is turning toward terpene profiles as a more reliable guide.

As lab testing becomes more transparent and widely available, consumers have the opportunity to better understand what they’re actually purchasing and how it will affect them.

The Future of Cannabis Language

The persistence of indica and sativa terminology reflects familiarity, not accuracy. While these labels may still serve as a loose cultural shorthand, they are increasingly out of step with scientific understanding.

The terpene synthase study adds significant weight to this transition, demonstrating that terpene diversity is genetically complex and not determined by cannabinoid levels. The clustering of PK and GG cultivars, despite their differing chemotypes, is a clear example of how chemical identity operates on multiple independent axes.

The future will involve buying cannabis based on terpenes, no longer “hype” strain names or indica and sativa, allowing consumers to truly get the cannabis experience they desire.

Final Thoughts: Moving Beyond Labels

The idea that cannabis can be neatly divided into indica and sativa is not supported by modern science. What we are actually working with is a biologically sophisticated plant whose effects emerge from overlapping and independently regulated systems.

At the center of that complexity are terpenes that are diverse, dynamic, and deeply influential.
