Weed is legal in Denmark, but only for medical use. However, Denmark’s laws on cannabis are conflicting and hence subject to varying interpretations. If you are wondering whether you will be able to buy some weed as a visitor in Denmark the answer is a resounding yes. The illicit market is rife and consumption of small amounts of cannabis is decriminalized.

About Denmark

Denmark is a Scandinavian country  that’s most famous for its beautiful architecture. Gun violence and crime are almost unheard of in Denmark and it’s no surprise that Danes are believed to be the happiest people in the world. Denmark has 70 inhabited islands; even Copenhagen, its capital city, is an island.

Is Medical Cannabis Legal in Denmark?

Yes, medical cannabis was legalized in Denmark under a four year pilot program that was started in January, 2018 through the Danish Medicines Agency. 1,700 patients were included in the program in the first year. By 2019, over 1,800 prescriptions for medical cannabis had been issued. A challenge in getting access to medical cannabis products however derailed the project and the numbers of medical cannabis prescriptions dropped in subsequent years. Denmark has to import cannabis medicines from other countries. In 2011, the Danish government had legalized synthetic forms of cannabis such as Marinol, Sativex, and Nabilone for the management of pain, chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, and muscle spasms.

Possession of up to 9.9 grams or 0.35 oz of cannabis is punished by a fine of about 70 euros for first time offenders. Possession of larger quantities will attract a prison sentence of 10 to 16 years. Driving under the influence of cannabis can cause one to lose their driver’s license conditionally or unconditionally.

In March 2022, five political parties among them the Red-Green Alliance and the Socialist People’s Party petitioned the government to create a five year pilot program for fully legalizing cannabis. Under this program, adults above 18 years would be able to purchase cannabis legally from public shops and also cultivate their own cannabis at home. However, these parties do not command a majority and the proposal was rejected.

Can You Grow Cannabis at Home in Denmark?

Can You Buy Weed in Freetown Christiania?

Freetown Christiania is known for its rampant trade in illicit hashish. This is a small neighborhood with about 1,000 households that’s located in the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Also known as The Greenlight City, Freetown’s pusher street is popular for the open trade of cannabis. However, stalls on the Pusher street were destroyed and now it’s not common to see traders openly selling weed, but they sell paintings and weed paraphernalia instead.

Will Denmark Legalize Cannabis?

The current government in Denmark does not support the full legalization of cannabis. But with the wave of legalization sweeping through Europe and the grassroot efforts being made in Denmark by pro cannabis groups, it might just be a matter of time.
