A powerful experience can change how someone sees their life. Turning that perspective into a lasting habit is a different challenge. This gap between insight and everyday practice is becoming an important question in psychedelic medicine: can treatment help people develop skills they continue using after the drug has worn off?

A new study examining psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy alongside mindfulness training offers an intriguing, preliminary answer.1 Among healthcare workers experiencing COVID-related depression, the combination produced greater short-term improvements in mindfulness and the ability to appreciate positive experiences than mindfulness training alone. Stronger mystical-type experiences were also statistically linked to improvements in mindfulness and depressive symptoms.

The findings suggest a possible role for psilocybin in accelerating psychological learning. They also reveal why the surrounding treatment matters, and why an early improvement should not be confused with a proven long-term advantage.

What the Psilocybin and Mindfulness Study Examined

The paper, accepted by the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports and available as a journal pre-proof, presents a secondary analysis of a previously reported randomized trial. It explores possible psychological mechanisms rather than reporting a new independent treatment trial.

Researchers enrolled 25 frontline physicians and nurses with COVID-related depression and burnout symptoms. Twelve were assigned to an eight-week mindfulness-based stress reduction program, commonly called MBSR. Thirteen received MBSR combined with group psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy using a 25-milligram dose.

MBSR teaches participants to pay attention to present experiences with less automatic judgment or reaction. The comparison therefore involved an active psychological intervention, rather than an untreated control group. Twenty-two participants completed the follow-up assessments.

The original randomized trial, published in September 2025, reported greater reductions in depressive symptoms at the two-week endpoint with the combination. The new analysis examines mindfulness, savoring, and the possible contribution of acute subjective experiences.

Measure Finding From the Study
Participants 25 enrolled; 22 completed follow-up assessments
Mindfulness at two weeks Greater improvement with psilocybin plus MBSR
Savoring at two weeks Greater improvement with psilocybin plus MBSR
Complete mystical experience 8 of 12 combination participants; 0 of 10 MBSR-only participants
Mindfulness at six months No statistically significant difference between groups

What Mystical Experiences Mean in Psychedelic Research

In this context, “mystical” describes reported features of an experience, rather than establishing a supernatural explanation. These can include a sense of unity, deep meaning, positive emotion, or changes in the usual experience of time and space. Researchers used a standardized questionnaire to measure their intensity.

A complete mystical experience meant meeting a specified score threshold across all questionnaire subscales. It was a research classification, not a diagnosis or a requirement for successful treatment.

The researchers found significant indirect associations linking treatment assignment, mystical-experience intensity, and changes in depression and mindfulness. This statistical approach, called mediation analysis, asks whether an intermediate factor might help explain a treatment’s effects.

However, the analysis cannot establish that the experience itself caused recovery. The scores could partly reflect drug effects, expectations, interpretation, or other processes. MyCannabis recently explored the wider debate over whether the psychedelic experience may be part of the medicine. This study adds preliminary clinical evidence without resolving that debate.

How Mindfulness Could Turn Insight Into Practice

The useful idea is that an acute experience and an ongoing practice might perform different jobs. Psilocybin may temporarily alter a person’s perspective. Mindfulness training provides repeated opportunities to notice thoughts and emotions without immediately becoming caught up in them.

Learning to Observe Thoughts Without Accepting Every Conclusion

The authors draw on a psychological model in which mindfulness supports “decentering.” This means recognizing a thought as a mental event rather than automatically accepting it as an accurate description of oneself or the world.

For example, a healthcare worker might notice the thought “I failed everyone today” and recognize it as a response to exhaustion and distress. That does not erase genuine problems. It may create space to assess the situation more accurately and respond with greater flexibility.

The proposed contribution of psilocybin is an experiential shift that makes such flexibility feel more accessible. The study did not directly demonstrate this full sequence, but it offers a testable explanation for why combining the approaches could be useful.

Why Savoring Deserves More Attention

Savoring means deliberately attending to and appreciating positive experiences. It is not forced cheerfulness. Someone might pause to register a supportive conversation, time outdoors, or a small accomplishment instead of letting it pass unnoticed.

The combination group showed greater gains in this capacity at two weeks. That finding broadens the discussion beyond symptom reduction: treatment may also help people engage with rewarding aspects of ordinary life. Whether these changes support lasting recovery remains a question for larger studies.

Why the Six-Month Results Matter

At six months, mindfulness scores were no longer significantly different between the groups. Depression scores also converged in the original trial. This does not show that everyone lost their gains, but it prevents a claim that adding psilocybin established superior long-term outcomes.

A possible interpretation is that the combination accelerated changes that mindfulness alone achieved more gradually. Other explanations include fading additional benefits or insufficient statistical power. The trial cannot reliably distinguish among them.

Speed could still matter if an intervention helps someone improve sooner. Establishing that value would require measuring everyday functioning alongside symptoms, treatment burden, and durability. Earlier relief is meaningful, but its benefits need to justify the additional resources involved.

The Next Opportunity Is Better Treatment Design

The promising direction is to test how preparation, practice, and follow-up shape outcomes, rather than assume that a more intense psychedelic experience is automatically better. Future research should examine:

  • Whether mindfulness improves outcomes beyond psilocybin therapy alone.
  • Which follow-up practices help sustain improvements.
  • Whether benefits justify additional time, staffing, and cost.

A new USC trial of psilocybin and mindfulness, announced October 7, 2026, will investigate the first question in 80 adults with depression. Researchers will compare psilocybin therapy with and without an eight-week mindfulness program, using psychological assessments alongside brain recordings and biological measurements.

That design complements the healthcare-worker trial. One asks what psilocybin adds to mindfulness; the other asks what mindfulness adds to psilocybin. Together, these approaches could clarify whether combining treatments delivers advantages beyond either component.

Supportive Care Still Requires Practical Safeguards

The healthcare-worker study was small, open-label, and based on self-reported outcomes. Participants knew their treatment assignment, and the combination involved additional therapeutic support. Its exploratory mediation analyses were not prospectively powered to establish mechanisms.

Clinical screening also excluded several higher-risk groups, including people with a personal history of psychosis or mania. Results from this supervised setting cannot establish the safety or effectiveness of unsupervised use.

The importance of support connects with MyCannabis’s recent coverage of psychedelic therapist experience and patient trust. That article examines attitudes from the same underlying trial, so it should not be counted as independent confirmation of effectiveness. Its practical relevance is the distinction between feeling understood and receiving demonstrably competent care.

Group delivery may make treatment more feasible, but therapist time remains substantial. For busy healthcare workers, an eight-week program also requires protected time. As an implication for employers, treatment access should accompany efforts to address workload and working conditions, rather than become another responsibility placed on exhausted staff.

A Promising Bridge Between Experience and Everyday Skills

The study’s contribution is a clearer hypothesis about how psychedelic therapy might work alongside psychological training. An acute experience could help open a different perspective, while repeated practice helps someone use it in ordinary life.

The evidence remains preliminary, and sustained superiority has not been demonstrated. Nevertheless, the combination offers a practical research direction: build treatments that help patients develop usable skills, evaluate whether those skills persist, and preserve effective mindfulness options for people who cannot access or do not want psilocybin.
