As cannabis continues to gain acceptance from both a legal and social perspective, research into its potential benefits is expanding at an unprecedented rate.  Once stigmatized and relegated to the fringes of scientific study, cannabis is now being rigorously examined for its therapeutic applications.  From chronic pain management to neurological health, new insights are emerging, demonstrating the plant’s versatility.  One example of this comes from a recent study1 that looked at the potential for cannabis to play a role in metabolic health and weight loss.  In it, the effects of tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) and cannabidiol (CBD) on metabolic markers were explored, offering compelling data on how these cannabinoids may help in weight management and overall health.

Details of the Study

The study in question was a placebo-controlled trial involving 44 individuals (31 women and 13 men) with an average age of 51.75.  The goal of the study was to determine the effects, if any, that THCV and CBD have on weight loss, abdominal fat reduction, and metabolic markers associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome.

During the study, the participants were administered either a placebo, a lower dose (8 mg THCV/10 mg CBD), or a higher dose (16 mg THCV/20 mg CBD) in the form of mucoadhesive oral strips once daily for 90 days.

THCV, a cannabinoid known for its unique interactions with the endocannabinoid system, is a CB1 neutral antagonist, meaning it does not activate the receptor but blocks its activity.  Given that CB1 activation is linked to increased appetite and fat storage, THCV has long been suspected as a potential tool for weight loss.  CBD, on the other hand, acts as a negative allosteric modulator of CB1, meaning it weakens the receptor’s activity.  The combination of these two cannabinoids aimed to promote metabolic health through weight reduction and improved cardiovascular markers.

Key Findings: Significant Improvements in Weight and Metabolic Markers

Promisingly, the study found that the participants who used the THCV/CBD oral strips experienced notable improvements in various key areas:

  • Weight Loss: Participants in the high-dose group lost an average of 4.1 kg, while those in the low-dose group lost 2.6 kg over 90 days. The placebo group saw negligible weight changes.
  • Abdominal Girth Reduction: Participants in both dosing groups experienced a statistically significant decrease in waist circumference, with the highest reduction being 13.0 cm.
  • Improved Blood Pressure: Systolic blood pressure saw an average decrease of 8.7 mmHg in the low-dose group and 12.1 mmHg in the high-dose group.
  • Cholesterol Reduction: Total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol) decreased significantly, particularly in the high-dose group.

When looking at these results, it is clear and reasonable to say that THCV and CBD appear to offer notable therapeutic benefits in both weight management and cardiovascular health – all without requiring lifestyle changes in diet or exercise.

Although benefits were found, it should be noted that there are limitations to the study that need to be considered.  Namely, it was a fairly small sample size, with only 41 individuals taking part.  To stand on its own and establish a newly accepted narrative on the benefits of cannabis, the study would need completed on a much larger scale.  Furthermore, there were multiple instances of abnormalities in liver function that could not be ruled in or out as a result of the study.

Looking forward, if the study were to be completed on a larger scale, and were to address ancillary concerns, THCV-based treatments could eventually become a viable alternative or supplement to current metabolic disorder therapies and weight loss regimens.

Other Notable Benefits of Cannabis

These findings that suggest certain cannabinoids may assist in boosting one’s metabolism are just the latest in a long list of what would, in the past, seem like an unlikely grouping of potential benefits.  The following are a few examples of some other notable benefits that the cannabis plant has to offer, which remain relatively unknown.

Increased Intimacy

Recent cannabis research has suggested that it can enhance sexual experiences by increasing sensitivity, lowering inhibitions, and improving overall satisfaction.  Studies have found that cannabinoids influence the endocannabinoid system in ways that promote relaxation and heightened pleasure, contributing to a more fulfilling sex life.

Calming Ones Mind

Anxiety and stress are not always bad things.  They are often a natural response to motivate oneself into addressing a problem or achieving a goal.  In moderation, they can also help build a better tolerance to life’s challenges, giving oneself the tools to overcome them.  For many, though, anxiety and stress can be overwhelming and an anchor on productivity and happiness.  For these individuals, take heed that cannabis has also been associated with reduced anxiety and stress.

Cannabigerol (CBG), a lesser-known cannabinoid, has demonstrated significant potential in lowering cortisol levels, improving memory retention, and providing anxiolytic effects without sedation.  These findings suggest that cannabis may be a useful tool for individuals dealing with chronic stress or anxiety disorders.

Boosting Creativity

Another area of interest is cannabis’s impact on creativity.  Studies have explored how THC influences divergent thinking, which plays a key role in creative problem-solving.  While moderate cannabis use appears to enhance creative expression, excessive consumption may have the opposite effect, highlighting the importance of balance.

Rediscovering Youth

Finally, emerging research indicates that THC may play a role in slowing the aging process of synapses in the brain.  Studies have suggested that cannabis can help maintain cognitive function by preserving neural connections, potentially offering neuroprotective benefits as individuals age.  While further research is required, these findings hint at cannabis’s potential role in promoting long-term brain health.

The Need for Moderation and Population-Specific Risks

When looking at each of the unique and amazing benefits that cannabis is believed to offer, proving the plant with promising therapeutic potential, it is important to recognize that this is not universal.  There are certain demographics that should exercise caution or avoid cannabis altogether:

  • Pregnant Women: Studies indicate that prenatal cannabis exposure may have negative effects on fetal brain development, impact risks for addition, and even result in genetic changes.
  • Adolescents: The developing brain is particularly susceptible to the psychoactive effects of THC, which can increase the risk of cognitive impairments and mental health disorders.
  • General Adult Use: Even in fully developed adults, excessive cannabis use can lead to dependency, decreased motivation, and potential cardiovascular effects. Like most substances, cannabis should be used in moderation for optimal benefits.

Final Thoughts – A Promising and Evolving Landscape

As research continues to discover new potential uses for cannabis, it is difficult to be anything but optimistic.  Yes, there are known risks, but studies such as this one on THCV and CBD add another layer to our understanding of the plant’s therapeutic potential.

As legalization fuels continued scientific discovery, the future of cannabis in medicine looks increasingly promising.  Whether for metabolic health, mental well-being, or neuroprotection, cannabis research is steadily laying a foundation for broader and more refined applications in health and wellness.
