Ole Miss Opens CBD Sleep Study With a Cannabis Grower

The University of Mississippi is beginning a clinical study of whether cannabidiol improves sleep, in partnership with a Mississippi medical cannabis company. The work will be run by the university’s National Center for Cannabis Research and Education, which announced the collaboration with Southern Sky Brands on July 28, 2026. No results exist yet, and the two organizations have released a plan rather than a finding.
Researchers say the study will track how CBD affects sleep duration, sleep quality, and participant-reported measures of well-being, and that it will assess both safety and effectiveness. Robert Welch, the pharmacist who directs the center, described the aim as generating “high-quality scientific data” to help patients, clinicians, and policymakers weigh the potential benefits of cannabinoids. Southern Sky, a farm-to-patient grower based in Canton, framed the partnership as an investment in patient care and in building trust through science.
What the announcement leaves out
The details that would let anyone judge the study are the ones the announcement omits. The organizations have not said how many people will take part, what dose or formulation of CBD they will receive, whether there will be a placebo group, whether participants and researchers will be blinded to who gets CBD, or when data will be collected. They also have not described how the study is funded or who controls the analysis and the decision to publish.
Those are not incidental. In sleep research, they largely decide whether a result means anything. Sleep is unusually sensitive to expectation: people who believe they have taken something to help them sleep frequently report sleeping better, whether or not the compound did anything. A study that leans on participant-reported wellness, without a placebo arm and blinding, can generate encouraging numbers that vanish under a stricter design. Objective measures (wrist actigraphy or in-lab monitoring) and an analysis plan registered before enrollment are what separate a persuasive finding from a marketing-ready one.
What the evidence on CBD and sleep shows
The science this study is entering is thin and mixed, not settled. Controlled trials of CBD for sleep tend to be small, short, and inconsistent, and several have found CBD performing about as well as placebo on the outcomes patients care about most.
One of the more rigorous efforts, a 2025 randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial1 in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, enrolled 125 adults with insomnia to test a THC-free, 300-milligram CBD-and-terpene formulation tracked with a wrist-worn device, but heavy dropout left just 56 in the final analysis. Across that group, it produced only a marginal increase in restorative sleep, an effect the authors themselves called of “questionable clinical significance,” with clearer benefit limited to subgroups such as people who slept poorly to begin with. The study was paid for by the company that makes the formulation. That funding pattern is common in this field, and it is precisely why disclosure of who pays and who designs the protocol matters.
Other work points the same direction. A recent meta-analysis of cannabinoids for insomnia suggested that any sleep benefit from cannabis may track more with CBD and CBN than with THC, while a separate CBD insomnia trial in Australia is still working its way toward over-the-counter approval. The gap between early promise and clinical proof is a recurring feature of cannabinoid science, one that also shows up in areas like cannabinoid cancer research.
CBD has cleared a high evidentiary bar in one place: Epidiolex, the purified CBD medicine the Food and Drug Administration approved in 2018 for rare, severe forms of epilepsy. Welch worked on the clinical program behind that drug before joining the university. Sleep is a very different claim, and the over-the-counter CBD products sold for it have not been tested to the same standard.
What to watch
The university brings real weight to the question. For decades it was the only federally licensed grower of research cannabis in the United States, under a contract with the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and it runs the center out of its School of Pharmacy, which also offers medical cannabis academic programs. That track record is exactly why the design choices deserve scrutiny. When the center releases specifics, such as sample size, dosing, a control arm, funding, and whether the protocol was registered before enrollment, those details will say more about how much to trust the eventual results than any headline number will.
