Oaksterdam University, the world’s oldest cannabis college, will be marking 15 years of its existence on September 24th. The 15th anniversary which has been branded “the event of the decade” has attracted the attention of high-profile lawmakers, cannabis advocates, luminaries, artists, school alumnae, the press, as well as the local community of Oakland. California's Governor Gavin Newsom will give an introductory video to recognize key cannabis advocates for the Luminary awards. Gov. Newsom recently signed important pro-cannabis legislation which takes immediate effect.

Libby Schaaf Oakland's mayor and Dale Sky Jones, the chancellor of the University are expected to give the welcome note. Recording artists Redman and D'Wayne Wiggins (Tony! Tony! Tone!) are among high-profile celebrities who have confirmed their attendance.

“Our vision has always been revolutionary. The industry has come so far yet has a long way to go. We look forward to continuing to be at the forefront of education, legal and public policy advocacy, social impact, and leadership.”

Dale Sky Jones

The evening event will happen at the Fox Theatre in Oakland CA on 24th September from 5 pm. This reconnection and networking event will begin with the screening of a cannabis documentary; American Pot Story by acclaimed filmmakers Dan Katzir and Ravit Markus. The documentary showcases the wins and losses of those who bravely fought to have cannabis legalized, says David Roach, co-founder, and director of the film festival.

This will be followed by a Panel Discussion with Filmmakers & Dignitaries and then an after-party which will serve as an alumni reunion as well as a networking opportunity. The event coincides with the final day of the 20th Annual Oakland International Film Festival (OIFF).

The event has been produced by the Oaksterdam Non-profit for Education (The ONE) in collaboration with other pro-cannabis organizations:

  • Students for Sensible Drug Policy (SSDP)
  • Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP)
  • Cannabis Talk 101 iHeart Radio

The executive producer of the event, the ONE chairwoman, Priscilla Agoncillo had the following to say:

“The ONE is producing this event to honor Oaksterdam University’s contribution to the world in bringing education about cannabis and helping shape the laws that cannabis businesses and consumers enjoy so liberally today.”

The event has also been sponsored by NORML CA, Homegrown Cannabis Co. and MJ Unpacked. James Dunn, the brand director for Homegrown Cannabis has expressed his delight, acknowledging the important role that the college is playing in moving the cannabis industry forward.

All proceeds from the event will be directed towards OU scholarships and helping individuals and communities that were adversely affected by cannabis prohibition to join the legal industry in a meaningful way.  Donations to this event are tax deductible. Tickets for this event are available at prices starting from $10.
