Elisaldo Araujo Carlini, a trailblazing Brazilian researcher, left an indelible mark on the world of medicinal cannabis before his passing on September 16, 2020, at the age of 90. Renowned for his groundbreaking discovery of the anticonvulsant properties of cannabidiol (CBD) in the 1970s, Carlini's life journey was marked by a deep-rooted commitment to alleviating human suffering through scientific exploration.

Born and raised in a rural district of Pirajá, São Paulo, Carlini's childhood experiences with herbal treatments ignited a passion for medicinal plants that would shape his illustrious career. After earning his medical degree from Escola Paulista de Medicina (now UNIFESP), he embarked on a journey of research and discovery that would span over six decades. His early investigations into the effects of cannabis extracts on laboratory animals laid the groundwork for groundbreaking insights into the psychopharmacological effects of Cannabis sativa compounds.

Despite the challenges posed by the conservative Brazilian Military Dictatorship, Carlini's relentless pursuit of knowledge led to seminal discoveries that revolutionized our understanding of cannabinoids. His collaborative efforts with renowned researchers, including Raphael Mechoulam, yielded groundbreaking insights into the therapeutic potential of CBD, paving the way for the development of groundbreaking medications like Epidiolex® and Sativex®.

Carlini's contributions extended beyond the laboratory, as he dedicated himself to mentoring students and advising colleagues, nurturing a new generation of researchers in the field. His academic legacy includes the establishment of the Brazilian Society of Psychobiology and the Brazilin center for information and epidemiology on psychotropic drugs (CEBRID) at UNIFESP, solidifying Brazil's position as a leader in cannabinoid research.

Speaking to MyCannabis, his step-grandson Ricardo P. Guimarães, had this to say about the legendary cannabinoid scientist: “In my journey with CBD Brasil and our mission to spread awareness and understanding of medicinal cannabis, I draw significant inspiration from the legendary and profound cannabis researcher, Elisaldo Carlini. As the grandfather of two of my brothers, his pioneering work and dedication to cannabis research have profoundly influenced my path. Following in his footsteps, I am committed to advancing the field of medicinal cannabis through rigorous scientific research, education, and advocacy.

Elisaldo Carlini's legacy as a trailblazer in cannabis research in Brazil and worldwide serves as a guiding light for our endeavors at CBD Brasil. His work has not only contributed to our understanding of cannabis's therapeutic potential but has also paved the way for future generations to explore this field further.”

A passionate advocate for the medicinal use of cannabis, Carlini's tireless advocacy efforts transcended academia, leading to his involvement in international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization. Throughout his career, he organized numerous national and international events, championing the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids.

Even in retirement, Carlini remained dedicated to his cause, mentoring graduate students and advocating for the recognition of cannabinoids as medicine until his final days. His legacy lives on through his wife, Solange Nappo, six children, and five grandchildren, as well as the countless lives touched by his pioneering research and unwavering commitment to scientific excellence. As we reflect on his remarkable life and contributions, we honor Elisaldo Carlini's enduring legacy as a visionary in cannabis research and a beacon of hope for generations to come.
