Medical Cannabis Helps Ease Addiction Cravings and Boosts Recovery Rates

A recent pilot study out of Canada is making many rethink long-held assumptions about cannabis and addiction. Interestingly, it has revealed promising outcomes for individuals undergoing recovery from substance use disorders, with findings that suggest medical cannabis can effectively play a role in structured settings.
Promising Results from a Residential Recovery Setting
The study, which was conducted by researchers from UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University (TRU), was recently published1 in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, and examined the effects of medically supervised cannabis use. Key takeaways from participants included:
- Reduced cravings for opioids and other harmful substances
- Improved sleep quality and mental health, particularly around anxiety and depression
- Better pain management, easing a frequent relapse trigger
- Higher retention in treatment, an often-overlooked metric in program success
According to Dr. Zach Walsh, co-lead researcher and psychology professor at UBC Okanagan, the findings suggest that “…medical cannabis could play a meaningful role in reducing cravings and improving retention in recovery programs.”
Rethinking the Gateway Drug Myth
The study comes at a time when outdated narratives about cannabis use continue to influence policy and public perception. Among the most persistent is the “gateway drug” theory – the notion that cannabis use leads individuals down a path toward harder drug use.

This new research reinforces that view, demonstrating how cannabis can actually help individuals distance themselves from opioids, alcohol, and stimulants by alleviating symptoms that often lead to relapse.
Prevention Starts with Better Pain Management
Beyond its role in recovery, cannabis may also hold untapped potential as a preventative tool – helping to reduce the likelihood of addiction before it even begins.
A recent study on cannabis and chronic pain uncovered a troubling disconnect between physicians and patients. Many patients feel their pain is either minimized or misunderstood by healthcare providers, leading to dissatisfaction with treatment plans and, in many cases, reliance on opioid medications.
By integrating cannabis earlier in the pain management process, patients may be spared the slippery slope of opioid dependency altogether. This not only provides patients with a more holistic option but also reduces the societal burden of opioid-related addiction.
As this latest study shows, when cannabis is introduced in a medically supervised and supportive context, it does not hinder recovery – it can help initiate it.
Overcoming Stigma and Resistance
Despite these benefits, challenges persist. Staff at Maverick Supportive Recovery expressed hesitation around cannabis, often due to lingering stigma or lack of education. Dr. Florriann Fehr, co-lead researcher and professor at TRU, notes that “reducing stigma through targeted education for program staff is critical,” particularly as the science behind cannabis continues to evolve.
The Road Ahead
This pilot study is just the latest to offer compelling evidence that large-scale trials are warranted. It is becoming increasingly clear that cannabis, when used responsibly and with medical oversight, may not only support recovery – it might also help prevent addiction before it begins.
