Is there a Link Between Screen Time and Cannabis Consumption?
It is no secret that screen time has ramped up considerably in our digital age. While this means we now have instant access to, essentially, the whole of human knowledge, various challenges have arisen with regard to the development of adolescents. For example, there is a quickly growing body of research that has highlighted a close relationship between screen time, parental influence, and the risk of substance experimentation among youth. This was most recently highlighted in a study1, providing context into the relationship between not only the amount of screen time but the type of screen activity and substance use.
The Screen Time Spectrum
This study is notable, as most looks at the effects of screen time in the past did not differentiate between types – simply amounts. Instead, it broke down screen time into three specific categories and their associations with substance use in adolescents between the ages of 10 and 12.
- Social Media Use: Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat expose adolescents to social comparison, curated realities, and potential exposure to substance-related content. Algorithmic feeds can amplify this, creating echo chambers where substance use may be normalized or glamorized. The study found a strong correlation between social media use and substances like alcohol and e-cigarettes.
- Streaming Video Content: Binge-watching series and movies on platforms like Netflix (NFLX ) and Hulu may seem innocuous, but the content often contains depictions of substance use, frequently presented casually or positively. This subtle yet pervasive exposure can desensitize young viewers to the risks.
- Video Gaming: The relationship between gaming and substance use is more nuanced. While not all gaming communities promote substance use, some online environments, especially those popular with older adolescents, can involve discussions or depictions of drug and alcohol use. The competitive nature of certain games might indirectly contribute to stress, a potential trigger for substance experimentation.
With regard to cannabis, it was found that, while any excessive screen time resulted in more cannabis use, social media, in particular, led to the highest rates of experimentation among adolescents for each of the reasons mentioned above.
Notably, the study controlled for various factors, including family, school, and peer contexts, demonstrating the strong link between these specific screen time activities and substance experimentation, independent of other influencing factors.
It also went further than simply establishing a correlation. By looking at psychological mechanisms at play, it was able to suggest that excessive engagement in the aforementioned types of screen time can negatively impact:
- Emotional Regulation: High levels of screen time, particularly social media, have been linked to difficulties in managing emotions, potentially making adolescents more vulnerable to external coping mechanisms like substances.
- Impulse Control: Certain screen activities, such as fast-paced video games, may contribute to heightened impulsivity, a known risk factor for substance experimentation.
- Sleep Disruption: The blue light from screens interferes with melatonin production, disrupting sleep patterns. Poor sleep is strongly linked to negative outcomes, including impaired emotional regulation and increased risk-taking.
Parental Mirroring and Combined Risks
Parental influence on adolescent behavior is undeniable. It is essential to recognize that this extends to habits, including screen and time substance use. This was shown in another recent study2 that when adolescents see parents using alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, even moderately, it can normalize these behaviors and increase experimentation likelihood.
Simply put – parents who spend excessive time on their own devices inadvertently communicate that such behavior is acceptable. This can then reinforce excessive poor screen time habits in their children. The combined influence of specific screen time activities and parental behaviors creates a particularly potent environment for adolescent substance experimentation. When adolescents are exposed to both sets of risk factors, they are significantly more likely to develop positive attitudes toward substance use.
Navigating a Way Forward
Thankfully, mitigating the risks associated with screen time and substance experimentation should be relatively straightforward. Screen time should be allowed in moderation and should be modeled by parents. Equally as important is to recognize and monitor the type of screen time. This can be done by,
- Differentiate Screen Activities: Encourage educational or creative screen use while limiting time spent on social media, passive video consumption, and certain video games.
- Establish Screen-Free Zones and Times: Designate areas (e.g., bedrooms) and times (e.g., mealtimes, before bed) where screen use is prohibited.
In our digital age, screen time is unavoidable. Instead, a shift is required from simply limiting overall screen time to a more nuanced approach that considers the quality of digital engagement and real-world influences.
