Sean Oganesyan, Founder of Surreal Yields – Interview Series

As cannabis cultivation expands far beyond small backyard setups, designing and operating large-scale grow rooms has become a science unto itself. Whether housing a dozen plants of a single strain or hundreds spanning the indica-sativa spectrum, a facility’s potential challenges often outnumber its crop. Likewise, strategies for maximizing yields can be highly specific, varying wildly from one cultivation method to another.
To explore the trade-offs of various grow room designs and see how they adapt across state markets, mycannabis.com caught up with Sean Oganesyan, Founder of Surreal Yields.
So what were your roles and ranks while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps? What were the most useful strategies and skills you acquired about teamwork and completing the objective during your time in the Marines?
I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1998 and served as a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. I earned meritorious promotion to Lance Corporal and deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit throughout Europe and the Mediterranean. What really shaped me was learning execution. The Marines taught me that every mission succeeds or fails based on preparation, communication, accountability, and discipline. Everyone understands their role. Everyone knows the standard. Everyone executes regardless of circumstances. That philosophy became the foundation of Surreal Yields. Whether we’re cultivating cannabis or building an operating platform, success comes from creating systems that allow ordinary people to consistently produce extraordinary results.
Where did your interest in cultivation room design and creation come from? What opportunities did you envision in those fields and what could you bring to the table?
I’ve always been fascinated by systems. Early in my career, I realized most people were focused on growing plants while very few were focused on designing environments that consistently produced great plants. Those are two completely different skill sets. Instead of asking, “How do I grow better cannabis?” I started asking, “How do we engineer an environment where exceptional cannabis becomes the predictable outcome?” That shift changed my entire career. Today we’ve helped design and optimize more than three million square feet of cultivation infrastructure because we approach cultivation as engineering rather than guesswork.
When did you create Surreal Yields, and what in particular inspired you to create the company? What were the most widespread problems that you hoped Surreal Yields could be a solution to?
Surreal Yields wasn’t created because I wanted another cannabis company. It was created because I believed the industry desperately needed operating systems. Too many cultivation facilities depended on one master grower. If that individual left, quality disappeared. That isn’t scalable. We built Surreal to prove that exceptional cultivation should come from repeatable systems, not personalities. Everything we do revolves around measurable standards, data, training, and continuous improvement. That’s how industries mature
How did you become acquainted and start working with major brands such as Cookies and Dr. Greenthumb? How did Surreal Yields help increase the size and success of their cultivation operations?
Relationships in this industry are built on results. Every opportunity led to another because facilities began seeing measurable improvements in quality, consistency, production efficiency, and operational structure. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside incredible brands including Cookies, Dr. Greenthumb, STIIIZY, Originals, 22Red, and many others. Our role has never simply been to grow cannabis. It’s to build organizations capable of growing exceptional cannabis long after we’ve left. That’s the difference.
What are the most common cultivation-related issues that you’ve noticed your clients make when you first begin working with them? Why are those exact issues so commonplace?
Most cultivation problems are actually management problems in disguise. Poor communication. Lack of documentation. No standard operating procedures. No accountability. Facilities often chase new genetics or expensive equipment hoping technology will solve operational problems. But technology doesn’t replace discipline. The best facilities execute fundamentals consistently. The worst facilities constantly look for shortcuts.
When it comes to larger cultivation rooms, what are some frequent problems and logistical issues that they have which smaller cultivation rooms usually don’t? At the same time, what are some problems that small cultivation rooms run into which larger facilities don’t nearly as much?
Small cultivation facilities struggle with resources. Large cultivation facilities struggle with consistency. Scaling doesn’t simply multiply production. It multiplies every weakness. If your operating procedures aren’t standardized, every new room introduces more variability. That’s why we focus heavily on repeatable systems. Whether it’s one room or one hundred rooms, every process should produce the same outcome. Consistency is scalability.
What are some specific ways you’ve had to adapt your design plans and services based on the state that your clients are located in? Are some state markets more difficult to design cultivation rooms for than other state markets?
Every state presents different regulatory requirements, environmental conditions, utility costs, labor markets, and building limitations. Designing a facility in California is completely different from designing one in New York, Michigan, or the Northeast. Rather than forcing one design everywhere, we build systems that adapt while maintaining the same operational philosophy. The principles remain constant, but the execution changes based on the environment. That’s what scalable engineering looks like.
Given your extensive experience with indoor cultivation room design, what advantages do you believe that indoor growing methods have over outdoor growing? Why are those advantages so crucial?
Indoor cultivation gives operators control. Agriculture has always been about managing variables. Indoor environments allow us to control lighting, temperature, humidity, airflow, irrigation, nutrition, sanitation, and biosecurity. The more variables you control, the more predictable your outcomes become. Patients and consumers deserve consistency. Indoor cultivation makes that possible.
How do you envision that the necessary systems and technologies that indoor cultivation rooms must use will evolve as the cannabis industry slowly but surely expands?
The next decade will be about smarter facilities. Artificial intelligence, machine vision, predictive analytics, automation, robotics, environmental modeling, and real-time data collection will fundamentally change cultivation. The companies that succeed will have the best information. We’re already building toward that future at Surreal Yields. We believe cultivation should become increasingly measurable, repeatable, and data-driven while never losing sight of the plant itself. Technology shouldn’t replace growers. It should make great growers even better.
