Oral CBD May Help Prevent Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating side effect experienced by many cancer patients, often leaving lasting nerve damage in the hands and feet. New research1 from the Department of Clinical Oncology and Palliative Care at Zealand University Hospital in Denmark suggests that oral cannabidiol (CBD) could provide a preventive approach, reducing early CIPN symptoms without major adverse effects.
Peripheral neuropathy occurs when peripheral nerves are damaged, causing weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain in the extremities. While common causes include diabetes, injuries, and exposure to toxins, chemotherapy drugs such as oxaliplatin and paclitaxel are well-known triggers. Current treatments—such as anticonvulsants (e.g., diazepam), antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), and mild opioids—focus on symptom management rather than prevention, and long-term use carries risks including dependence and side effects.
What is CBD and How Might It Help?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many naturally occurring phytocannabinoids found in cannabis. Research has demonstrated therapeutic benefits in areas including seizure reduction, chronic pain relief, and anxiety management. Scientists have also explored CBD’s neuroprotective potential2, raising the possibility of applications in nerve-related conditions.
In this Danish study3, cancer patients scheduled to receive oxaliplatin or paclitaxel were given oral CBD at a dose of 150 mg twice daily. The regimen began one day before chemotherapy and continued for eight days. A control group received no CBD.
At the end of the trial, results showed that patients taking CBD experienced a reduction in the early onset of CIPN symptoms, with no serious side effects reported. This suggests that CBD could offer a preventive benefit rather than only serving as a post-onset treatment.
Why This Matters for CIPN Prevention
CIPN can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life, often limiting mobility and making daily tasks difficult. In some cases, symptoms persist long after chemotherapy ends. A preventive option like CBD could represent a major step forward, reducing the need for ongoing medications that may bring their own complications.
While the findings are promising, researchers stress that more evidence is needed. Larger, randomized clinical trials will be essential to confirm effectiveness, refine dosing, and explore long-term safety.

If future trials validate these findings, CBD could be integrated into supportive cancer care protocols, offering patients a safer preventive option than existing drug therapies.
